Listen to Obituary

Marla Sue Burton (age 70, Clearfield UT) - Our dear wife, mother, grandmother, loving sister, aunt, and friend passed away at her second home (CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital - Davis) on April 22, 2026 surrounded by loved ones.

Marla was born on April 17, 1956 in Denver, CO to Maynard and Jean Jackson. Marla was the middle of 6 children. She spent her childhood and early teen years in Colorado. In 1970, she moved with her family to Idaho Falls, ID. She graduated from Bonneville High School, top of her class in 1975. After high school, she moved to Bennion, UT to be with her family. She started in an ‘on the job training’ in respiratory care at the old Primary Children’s Hospital. Later, Marla took course work and ultimately completed the requirements to become a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner.

In 1977, Marla met Clyde Brent Burton. They were married on June 24, 1977, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had four kids in 5 years (and 4 months). She is an outstanding and remarkable wife, mother, and grandmother. Marla would do anything for her family and especially her kids and grandkids! Marla taught each one of her family members important lessons of faith, loyalty, hard work, integrity, and love. Her actions were always her best lessons.

Marla is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many service opportunities. She was an amazing Cub Scout leader, and she and Clyde put together some legendary Pinewood Derbies and Blue & Gold Banquets. They were a great team. She also was a wonderful young women’s teacher, leader, and camp director. Additionally, as a service she would teach CPR to many youth groups, scouts, and leaders.

Marla & Clyde moved to Davis County in 1980 to raise their growing family. She started working at Davis Hospital in 1981. To say Marla worked at Davis Hospital is a bit of an understatement. Until her death, she was still an employee there (some 45 years later). It may sound cliche, but the hospital is her second home. And if the hospital was a second home, the doctors, nurses, therapists, housekeepers, gift shop attendants, etc… literally everyone there was her second family. Marla didn’t exchange her time merely for a paycheck. She exchanged her time for opportunities to minister to people. And minister she did… she devoted her life to saving, rescuing, healing, helping, serving, and making everyone she came in contact with better. Marla dedicated her life to caring for others with compassion and strength and will be remembered for her deep love of family (immediate and work) and the comfort she brought to those around her.

In 2002, Marla took some of her skills and abilities and started working at Tanner Clinic. She worked for Dr. Gary Alexander. She loved her work at Tanner Clinic. As a testament to how awesome Marla is and how much her patients came to rely upon her, someone sent her a text message around 8 pm on April 21 asking her to call in a vital prescription for their husband... she died 10 hours later! (I know she wanted to help them get their prescription and probably would have done so if given the chance! It

might be the only time she didn’t do something that was asked of her.)

Marla and Clyde enjoyed traveling together. Marla loved Disneyland and went at least once a year for the last couple decades. She used to have season passes. She loved to take her kids and grandkids and enjoy the Magic Kingdom together. Recent trips for Marla and Clyde include places like Alaska, Ireland, Switzerland, and most recently South Africa. Many more adventures were planned...

Marla’s love language was gift giving, and she is one of the all-time great gift givers. She would painstakingly plan and prepare for every birthday and holiday. She loved to make traditions around her favorite holidays and made them all special for our family. She especially loved to give gifts during the Christmas holidays. If you received one, you know what we’re talking about.

Marla loved crafty things. She did diamond art, ceramics, wood and painting projects, and made countless blankets and quilting projects. She would regularly host craft nights. She loved to wrap herself in a Minky blanket and watch any Hallmark movie but especially seemed to love the Christmas movies. It wasn’t uncommon to see this sight even in July.

Marla’s life was cut unexpectedly short due to complications from stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. In her short time from diagnosis to death, she became an advocate of early detection by regular check-ups and colonoscopies as early and often as possible. She made each of her kids of age schedule appointments and would advocate to everyone to do the same.

Marla is survived by her husband, Clyde Burton, her children Ryan (Misty) of Syracuse, Neil (Jenn) of West Point, Cory (Heidi) of West Haven, and Lindsay (Matt) Myers of West Point. She has 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons. Marla’s siblings are Diane (Alan) Butterfield of Mapleton UT, Maynard (LuDean) Jackson of Idaho Falls ID, Lori (Gary) Hamm of Tooele UT, and Kristi (Jeff) Curtis of Taylorsville UT. She is preceded in death by her parents, Maynard Cunningham and Jean Mae Jackson, a brother David Jackson, and her grandson Logan J Burton.

The family would like to thank and recognize ALL of the amazing, skilled, and capable care providers at CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital - Davis. We now know why our mom loved and trusted her care to each of you... thank you for doing God’s work and being His very capable and compassionate hands during the last weeks of our mother’s life.
