Edward Rich Brewer

July 25, 1933 ~ January 6, 2019

Edward Rich Brewer, 85, passed away at his home from cancer related complications on Sunday, January 6, 2019. He was born on July 25, 1933 in Ogden, Utah, the son of Joseph West and Myrene Rich Brewer. He grew up in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School and the University of Utah. Rich enjoyed learning and playing. While at the University of Utah he was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He was on the University of Utah ski team.

Rich was proud to be a Marine and served as a 2nd Lieutenant Infantry Officer in the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. He was the Commanding Officer of the USMC reserves in Ogden for three years obtaining the rank of captain.

Rich married the love of his life, Jane Hammond on December 28, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Rich served as secretary, treasurer, and vice president of the J.W. Brewer Tire Co., which became the largest commercial tire distributor in the Intermountain West with 20 locations in seven states. After his retirement Rich spent time with his family investment company and contributed actively to his community.

He served as a community member and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the McKay Dee Hospital and the McKay Dee Foundation. He also served as Chairman of the Defense Depot Ogden Reuse Committee. Rich spent three years coordinating preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Northern Utah and carried the Olympic flame through part of downtown Ogden.  He was also deeply involved with Weber State University where he received an honorary doctorate in 2009 and served as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the John B. Goddard School of Business and Economics. He also served as a trustee of the Weber State University Foundation. Based on his commitment to community service, he was honored with the “Wall of Fame” award from the Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce, the Distinguished Service Award from the Weber State University Alumni Association, and the “Spirit of Ogden” Award for leadership of the Defense Depot Ogden Reuse Committee. Rich loved serving in the Rotary Club of Ogden and served as President.

Rich was awarded the Silver Beaver from the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed helping young men develop character and outdoor skills. Rich was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rich felt that having his four sons serve missions and be married in the temple was his greatest accomplishment.

He was also an avid outdoors man and shared his love of skiing, river running and hunting and the beauty of the natural world with his four sons and friends. Rich had a distinguishable laugh that will be greatly missed.
