Olivia (Garcia) Martinez

September 12, 1948 ~ January 7, 2022

Olivia Martinez, age 73, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2022, at her home in Syracuse, Utah, surrounded by her family.

Olivia was born on September 12, 1948, in Hondo, Texas, to Sara and Jose Garcia. She was one of seven siblings. Olivia married David Martinez of Ogden in 1971 and they had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Together they had twin sons and one daughter, and they settled in Syracuse, Utah, where they raised their family and lived for over 30 years. A beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, she was a source of light and strength to so many.

Olivia was a gifted seamstress and created the most exquisite dresses and blankets. She retired from Autoliv Airbag Division where she worked as a sewing instructor and taught thousands of people how to sew. She was always willing to do any job asked of her and was a valued team member. She also worked at Catalina Sportswear, where she was able to use her incredible sewing and teaching expertise. She made many life-long friends and will be fondly remembered for these special talents.

Olivia held a deep faith in God and was a proud member of the Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church Parish in Layton, Utah. She was also a valued member of The Sewing Angels, a group that provides quilts, baby items, and other goods for veterans. Her Mondays were spent with all her Angel friends making items to be donated to Catholic Community Services, Ogden Regional Medical Center, Christmas Box House, and local Veterans Hospitals and nursing homes.

Olivia’s greatest joy was having all her family over for Sunday dinner where she always had everyone’s favorite food. Her homemade tortillas, beans and rice and fried potatoes are legendary, and her table was always open to everyone. She also had a true green thumb and her gardens produced some of the best salsas. Her other favorite past times were camping, spending time at the cabin with her sisters in Bear Lake and taking care of her newly adopted toothless dog, Rolo.

In addition to her husband David, Olivia is survived by her two sons Ron (Julie) Martinez and Vaughn (Michelle) Martinez; daughter Cande (Zeb) Booker; six grandchildren Kole Booker, Lauren Booker, Jake Martinez, Megan Martinez, Cameron Martinez, and Riley Martinez; siblings Enedino (Alice) Garcia, Galdino (Virginia) Garcia, Ofilia (Dave) Borgeson, and Dolores (Gabriel) Archuleta. Olivia was also mom to several other children, who she raised and cared for as her own.

Olivia was always taking care of the people she loved, and she had a special gift for making others feel welcome and accepted. A strong, compassionate, and beautiful soul to all who knew her, she will forever be remembered with love.

Due to the pandemic and her concern about keeping everyone safe, her request was to have a Graveside service which will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. If you would like to join the family for the interment, it will take place at the Syracuse Cemetery, 1044 W. 1290 S. Syracuse, Utah. Friends may visit with family Saturday from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Syracuse Mortuary, 869 S 2000 W. Syracuse, Utah.
