Melvin  J Thompson, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at age 92 on Monday, January 15, 2018, in Clearfield, Utah, of causes incident to age.

Mel was born September 30, 1925 in Pingree, Idaho, the son of Edith Letrisha Furniss and Floyd Christian Thompson.  He married Lois Mardell Short on September 2, 1948. They later divorced. They had 8 children. He then married Shanna Hansen Hemsley on May 28, 1975, and with her six children, combined the two families into one big family.

Mel served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for Hardy Scales, Utah Department of Transportation, and the LDS Church. He was a lifelong scouter receiving the district Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, and completing Woodbadge. In addition to scouting, he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, and photography. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

His surviving family includes his wife Shanna, daughters: Susan (Darrel) May, Layton, Sally (Tim) Bennett, Littleton, CO, step-daughters: Glenda (Stephen) Swallow, Clinton; Debra (Glenn) Rawson, Syracuse; sons: Douglas (Marsha, dec.) Thompson, Ogden, Dennis (Gwen) Thompson, Springfield, VA, Duane (Alice) Thompson, West Haven, and step-sons: Bryan (Jill) Hemsley, Kaysville; Shayne (Cathy) Hemsley, Farmington; Dwight (Julie) Hemsley, Clinton; Kyle (Sheri) Hemsley, Layton; 50 grandchildren and 81 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother: Ivan Thompson, Layton. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, a sister, a daughter Melanie, and sons Scott and Darwin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Clearfield 3rd Ward Chapel, 350 Vine Street, Clearfield, Utah.  Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, South Ogden, Utah.
