Marilyn Pledger

March 19, 1932 — June 9, 2019

Marilyn Anna Russell Pledger our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, (87) passed away after a long battle with dementia (Alzheimer’s Disease) early in the morning on a beautiful summer day, June 9, 2019 surrounded by family that adored her.  She was born on March 19, 1932 in Ogden, Utah to Dean Stanley and Emma Rasmussen Russell.  Mom was the eldest of four daughters born to her parents.

Mom was reared and educated in Ogden, Utah graduating from Weber High School in 1950.  She later attended Weber State College & Stevens-Henegar College.

In 1951 Mom met the love her life, David Arthur Pledger (Art), on Washington Boulevard in Ogden and were married on December 1, 1951. They later sealed their marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1961.

In September of 1952 they bought their first home.  It was World War II housing located in Washington Terrace.  In 1953 their first daughter Janae was born.  They subsequently moved to Roy City in 1955 and their second child, Curtis Arthur, was born.  Mom worked as a Seasonal Employee at the IRS located in Ogden between 1957 and 1961.  She left the IRS to have her final child, Kelly Kay, in 1962.

In 1958 Mom and Dad built a new, larger home in northern Roy (Harmony Park) where they ultimately raised their family and enjoyed the friendship of neighbors and their LDS ward. They eventually moved to Kaysville and then to Layton.

Mom had a love for music since she was a child and became an accomplished pianist and organist. She taught piano in her home between 1961 and 1970 to many friends, neighborhood kids, relatives and others within Roy City.  She was the Roy Eleventh Ward Organist for most of the 1960’s.  She took her calling serious, always wanting to improve and began taking organ lessons from the assistant organist (Roy Darling) for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the basement of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

In 1970 she started a career as a secretary working in both the Art and English Departments at Roy High School.  In 1975, she commenced working for the State of Utah, Division of Family Services located in Layton.  She retired in 1991 as a Caseworker for the Division.

After retiring, mom and dad bought a fifth-wheel trailer and traveled the United States.  They also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii and a cruise to the Caribbean.

Mom loved chocolate, classical music, reading, the beauty of nature, Gone with the Wind, and eating at the Maddox Restaurant in Brigham City.  But, most of all, she loved her family, parents and three sisters. Holiday parties were a family tradition since her birth, and were very special for her.  She expended an incredible amount of energy and money to make sure these parties were special and perfect. She carried these traditions well on after her kids were married with families of their own.

Mom and dad accomplished much to be thankful for and proud of in their lives and they have achieved what most people can only wish for.

During her long and debilitating illness, she never lost her sense of humor, and was very courageous and did not complain.  She loved the staff at Fairfield Village in Layton and Encompass Hospice of South Ogden and they loved her. The family would like to thank those individuals for the compassionate and loving care they gave mom. They were absolutely wonderful and provided comfort for the entire family in the final hours prior to mom’s passing.

Mom was preceded in death by her husband Art in October 2013, her parents, and one sister, Mrs. Neal (Linda) Burrows.  She is survived by daughter Janae Pledger, son Curtis Arthur (Donna) Pledger and daughter Kelly Kay Bone.  She has seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.   She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Kathleen) Gilbert, Layton; and Mrs. Robert (Deanie) Stott, Farmington.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 13, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit family Thursday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
