Laura Ellen Savage Homer passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019 at her home in Roy, Utah.

She was born August 7, 1930 in Hyrum, Utah, a daughter of Gordon Clifton and Phyllis Hansen Savage. She was reared on the family farm in Hyrum, graduating from South Cache High School and LDS Seminary, with the class of ’48. She attended Utah State for two years, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She also attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City.

On June 28, 1951, Laura married Keith Homer in the Logan Temple. They resided in Logan while attending college, then moved to Ogden and in 1955 settled in Roy, Utah.

In 1989 Laura realized her life-long dream of graduating from Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in Gerontology and was a commencement speaker. She was a member of Sigma Phi Omega, the National Honorary Gerontology Society, and also graduated from the Ogden LDS Institute.

Being hearing impaired from Meniere’s disease, Laura became an advocate for hearing impaired people and conducted hearing loss support group meetings in the Ogden area for years. She was associated with Ogden Speech and Hearing Company, had been a member of the State Licensing Board for Audiology and Speech Pathology and had served two terms on the State Deaf and Hearing Impaired Advisory Council. Laura also served on the Utah State Assistive Technology Board. She was active in political causes to help physically challenged people and was instrumental in a bill to eliminate the sales tax on handicap devices. A highlight of her life was being invited to Governor Leavitt’s office to witness the signing of this bill.

She had been involved in PTA, both on the local and regional boards, she had been a regional chairman for cancer drives for many years, and Laura helped with local elections. She was a member of DUP, receiving the Faith in Fortitude Award from the national Daughters of Utah Pioneers and a 50 year membership pin. She and friend, Fay Green, were co-chair women, building the Roy Municipal track for the Relief Society Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1992. Laura was an active member of the Roy Tenth and Thirtieth Wards.

She served as president of the Roy First and Roy Tenth Ward Relief Societies. She had also served as Roy West Stake Relief Society President, and had served as a Regional Welfare Representative for the Roy region. She also served as a Primary President, taught classes in Relief Society and was a faithful visiting teacher.

Her service was well known, first to her husband and family, then to the Church and the community. She enjoyed and loved her grandchildren and their many activities which are recorded in their Grandma Angels Books. Laura and Keith served a mission to Johannesburg, South Africa where they organized and operated a distribution center. They also served in the Ogden Temple. She helped with the Family History by doing data entry, and loved doing their genealogical research. She was awarded “The Woman of Achievement Award” from Roy City in 2001 for her community service. She compiled several books of remembrance, wrote stories and poetry. The culmination of these histories was the history of her family, entitled “Life Recorded.” In 2009, Laura and her husband Keith were Grand Marshalls of the Roy City Parade.

Her husband, Keith passed away September 4, 2010. She is survived by six children, Jed (Sheri) of Sandy; Jan (Steven) Mueller of Harrisville; Kelly (Pam) Homer of West Point; Collin (Lilli) of Boise, ID; Kayla (Joe) Boudreau of West Haven; Marcia Homer of Portland, OR; 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She has a foster daughter, Orrita Begay Olsen of Farmington, NM. Also surviving are five brothers, Loren, Don, Leon, Willis and Ariel Savage. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heidi Mueller; a great-granddaughter, Grace May Homer; and her sister, Dian Miller.

Respecting Laura’s wishes a Celebration of Life will be held for friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14th at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15th at the Roy 30th Ward, 5900 South 3100 West, where the family will meet with friends one hour prior.

Interment will be at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, where Laura will be interred with Heidi and Gracie May, her two grandchildren and next to her husband and best friend, Keith Homer.

In lieu of flowers, especially to Laura’s Sunflower Club Friends, take a sunflower and visit a friend and rejoice with her – she can hear again!
