CLEARFIELD – Laird Dwight Slaugh, 73, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019 in Davis Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 19, 1946 in American Falls, Idaho the son of Frank Edward and Mildred Pearle Johnston Clinger Slaugh. Laird grew up on the family farm in Aberdeen, Idaho. He lived in Pocatello from 1971-1978, Layton, UT from 1978-2003, and in Clearfield, UT from 2003 until his passing.

Laird graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1964, attended Ricks College in Rexburg, ID, and graduated from BYU in 1971 with a BA in economics.

Laird met Nancy Jane Schlueter during his last term at BYU and they were married on December 17, 1971 in the Idaho Falls Temple.

Laird is a member of the Clearfield 22nd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a missionary in the West Spanish American mission in California. He has held various callings throughout his life including scouts, primary, and Sunday school. He has dedicated the last several years loving and serving in his family history and indexing callings. He loved studying the scriptures and was very knowledgeable of the gospel.

Laird worked as an underwriter and loss control specialist with Farmers Insurance, an assistant manager with 7-Eleven, and a customer support specialist with America Online. He retired after suffering for several years from a combination of medical issues.

Laird’s hobbies and interests included spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, reading, scripture and gospel study, history, and computers. Fishing was his passion and he loved going with his boys and still made the time to go with his life-long best friend.

Laird was a friend to everyone and had an amazing sense of humor. Among his family and friends, he was well known for his jokes and shenanigans and tried to be positive and put a smile on the faces of those around him.

Surviving is his wife Nancy; three sons, Dwight A. Slaugh (Regina) of Spanish Fork; Jesse A. Slaugh (Debra Frost) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Benjamin L. Slaugh of West Valley City; six grandchildren, Amelia, Joshua, Allison, Dustin, Collin, and Canaan Slaugh; one sister, Lynn Moyle (Joe) of Star, Idaho; and three brothers, Leland Clinger (Ila) of American Falls, Idaho, Phil Slaugh (Doreen) of Moses Lake, Washington, and Dan Slaugh of St. George.

Preceded in death by his parents, one son, Nathan Edward Slaugh, and sisters Laurel Johnson, Eva Stoker Davidson, LaVerne Pierce, Thelys Bushman, and Jackie Handy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family on Friday, December 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
