JAMES “JIM” SNYDER

February 23, 1931 – May 25, 2019

James H Snyder passed away in Bountiful, UT on May 25, 2019 from weaknesses incident to old age.  He was 88 years old.

Jim was the 5th of 8 children born to Ora Mae Miner and Karl Snyder in Provo, UT.  He grew up in SLC, west of the state Capitol, where he attended Washington Elementary, Horace Mann JH, and West High Schools.

In 1948 at age 17, Jim enlisted in the U. S. Air Force.  There, he served his country full time, including an assignment in Japan, until 1952.  Soon thereafter, Jim enlisted in the Utah Air National Guard where he served part-time from 1953 until 1980.  Jim transitioned to full-time service, achieving the rank of full Colonel at his retirement in 1991.

Jim met Marilyn Louise Hofer, the love and light of his life, on a blind date in 1953.  They married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 23, 1953, and gratefully now are reunited after 10 years apart.  They served together as weekend shift coordinators at the Bountiful Temple for 13 years, as well as humanitarian service missionaries from 2003 to 2004.  Their family of 6 children was reared in SLC, just south of the Rose Park Golf Course where Jim enjoyed many rounds with family and friends.  Golf was the fourth love of his life – after his Heavenly Father, his family, and the freedoms afforded here and abroad through service to his country.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather (18), and great-grandfather (27, with 3 on the way).  Jim worked hard his entire life.  In addition to his daily work (including a decade as head of the Plat Department for SL County), Jim always had projects or repairs going for his family or neighbors.  Jim and Marilyn built or made improvements to all of their children’s homes and yards.

Jim was a man of faith and prayer, a sweet and generous soul.  He may have come to the gospel later in life, but he embraced it whole-heartedly his last 40 years.  Jim is survived by his children: Stephen (Carol), Mark (Suzann), Mike (Sandy), Scott (Bonnie), Wendy (Kurt), and Cindy.

Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 1825 S. 800 E. Bountiful, Utah.  Friends may visit family Friday May 31st at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. from 6-8 pm and at the church from 12:30 – 1:30 pm prior to services.  Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Bountiful, Utah.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Humanitarian Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jim’s family share their profound thanks for the loving care given by the Creekside Senior Living Center (Brittany, Mia, Holly and their Memory Care associates), Renew Home Hospice (Marina and Kerri), and the SLC VA Hospital (Dr. Rupper and Deb), and for the good wishes received from long-time friends of Jim and Marilyn.
