Hortensia Larrea

July 1929 – June 5, 2020

Heaven opened up in thunders glory to receive another angel . . . Hortensia Larrea, age 90, passed away peacefully from complications of Dementia at her daughter’s home on June 5, 2020 in Layton, Utah.  She was a loving caring mother to the end.  She was born in Ecuador and at the age of 13, one of her aunts told her that she would have 3 children before she moved to the USA. Her aunt’s prognostications came true, when she move to the USA to join her husband, Gonzalo Larrea, who preceded her in death a year ago.

She had to learn a new culture, new language, and even how to drive. She became a citizen of this wonderful country many years ago, but she never forgot her homeland.  She gave up everything and everyone to give her children a better life.  Even with a lonely heart and a very tough marriage, she prevailed because of her Faith in God. She persevered through one-heartache after another but never gave up.

She became the strongest best mother anyone could ever ask for. Hortensia always put her children first before anyone or anything. She taught her children the true meaning of love, respect, Faith, courage, empathy, caring, and sharing.  She would give her last penny in her pocket to help someone in need and she would never let anyone leave her home hungry or tired.

In the end, her little body gave up the battle she fought so hard to keep alive.  Through her 50 plus years of leaving her homeland she never missed a day in her life that she didn’t pray to our Lord in Heaven and sent blessings to her family. She died knowing that although she was not rich in money and material wealth, she was rich in family love and the Holy Spirit. Her strength, courage, and Faith has been passed on to everyone she crossed paths with and her eternal blessings will be cherished by all.

She is survived by her three daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; Leslie, Monica (Steve), and Doris.  She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and for the rest of their lives she has blessed them; Jason (Araya & Samantha), Tiffiny (Daniel), and Aaron (Dacia, Isaac, Elijah, Dacarion, and Amari). They will miss her very much but will rejoice knowing that a piece of her spirit is with them always.

She was blessed to have had family by her side to the end and she died peacefully surrounded by love. Her family shielded her from the tragic news and events of our time, so she passed not knowing the tragedy that has hit our country and the world.

The family wishes to thank Brio Hospice, (formally known as ComfortWorx), for their help over the past two years. Doctor Gary Holland and his caring staff where with her every step of the way.  Their love for her helped the family get through the natural process of dying.  Without their care, love, support and knowledge this would have been so much harder for the family to endure.  Our hearts and blessings go out to the Brio team.

In Lieu of flowers, in Hortensia’s honor, please donate to the Utah Food Bank. She was a kind and sharing human being and she would love for everyone to donate food and support, especially during this pandemic. She prided herself in cooking and what a better way to honor her memory than to share the bounty of food for those in need.

Note from her family: “For everyone that knew our mother, our mom’s dying wish was for all of us to go out and do one act of kindness for someone and ask them to pay it forward. We hope that in her honor you will do that with us.  God Bless you all”

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.
