Fern Clarke Norton

1921 ~ 2016

ROY – Fern passed away on June 7, 2016 of causes incident to age.

Mom was born Lulu Fern Meyers on December 1, 1921 in Sugar City, Idaho, the youngest child of Charles Henry Meyers and Mary Ann Hamilton into a family of five brothers and a sister who all adored their baby sister.  Her parents, brothers, and sister all preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glen Wallace Clarke, who passed away on October 18, 1982.  They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on January 27, 1943 and spent 40 wonderful years together.  She later married Leslie T. Norton on February 14, 1992, and enjoyed 10 sweet years, before he passed away.  Les’ sons and their families were always very caring toward Mom which we all appreciated.

Fern loved to have busy hands.  She knit and crocheted most of her life and made beautiful ceramic figurines and doll faces.  An excellent seamstress, she sewed quality clothes for herself, her children, and grandchildren.  In later years she dressed the dolls she made.  Fern was a gracious hostess and often entertained family and friends.  Mom loved flowers and always felt better when she could get her hands in a little dirt.  She loved to play games with her grandchildren, but never enjoyed losing.  She would often go late into the night until she finally won.  She was a good writer and even wrote some poetry.  Mom was always a good sport and made the most of Dad’s outgoing personality.  Though not an avid golfer, Dad talked Mom into playing in a golf tournament at Hill Air Force Base where she hit a hole-in-one.  After being a little wounded, Dad was so proud of her and told the story often but could never claim one himself.

Fern had a rich pioneer heritage and was always interested in family history.  An active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, she collected histories and stories of ancestors for us to share with our children.  Thank you, Mom for that great gift!

Fern was always faithful in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She came from “believing blood”.  Over the years she served repeatedly as a teacher and leader in the Primary, Young Women, and the Relief Society.

Fern is survived by her four children, Luana Clarke, Roger Glen (Janet) Clarke, Susanne (Steve) Carrigan, and Catherine (Kent) Wimmer; along with 16 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren.  She will be missed by all of us.  We love you Mom, grandma, great-grandma, and friend.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the North Park Ward, 2175 West 4250 South, Roy.  Friends may visit with family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.  Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Mom would love contributions made to the LDS Church Humanitarian Fund.

The family thanks the doctor and staff of Envision Hospice for their loving care.
