"Gone Hikin"

William Hegsted Shurtleff, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. He was born on September 12, 1916 to Horace Luman and Inga Hegsted Shurtleff in Harrisville, Utah.

He graduated from Weber High School in 1935, USU in 1940, and North Western University Dental School (DDS) in 1950. He married Maurine Carr on April 2, 1943 in Kearney, Nebraska. They were later divorced. On February 6, 1976, he married Roma Andersen Hall in the Ogden LDS Temple.

Bill was born and raised in Harrisville, and later moved to Logan, and Washington DC and with the military he has lived in Maryland, Nebraska, Saipan, Chicago, New Mexico and settled in Ogden living here for 59 years. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as Bishop and Counselor in a Bishopric. He enjoyed scouting where he was a Scout leader, Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver.

Bill served as the Mayor of Harrisville as well as a Council member. He was a member of Weber County Sheriff''s Mounted Posse and a member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers.

He enjoyed woodworking and built his barn and cabin, farming, art, camping and hiking with his family, swimming and ice-skating, gardening and traveling.

Bill is survived by his wife, Roma; sons Joseph (Patti) Shurtleff, Fayetteville, North Carolina; David (Rollane) Shurtleff, Uinta; Bill (Janet) Shurtleff, Ogden; Richard (Lili) Hall, Farmington; and Marc (Diane) Hall, North Ogden; daughters, Mary Lou (Carlos) Heslop and Jeanie (Lane) Maw, Plain City; Kathie (Dennis) Rich, Riverton; and Jan (Jed) Taylor, Farmington; 53 grandchildren, and 98 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings, one son, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 11 a.m. at North Ogden LDS 20th Ward, 3100 North 575 East. Friends may visit family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
