William Marvin Matthews passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024, at 88 years old. Marvin was born on June 9, 1935, in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of William Martin and Nellie Blanch Matthews.
Marvin’s young life was full of adventure as he traveled with his family to support his father’s construction career. He spent time in South America and at various job sites across the United States. He fondly remembers attending school in Davis Dam, Nevada and Cedar City, Utah.
Marvin landed in Farmington, Utah, and met the love of his life at the corner Pharmacy. He married Lola Raedean Hayward on February 2, 1957.
He earned a position at Marquardt (later Thiokol), and he and Raedean settled down in Washington Terrace, Utah and have lived there for the last 55 years. They raised two beautiful daughters, Mary Lena and Marva Rae, and his children and grandchildren were Marvin’s pride and joy.
He had a legendary wit and endless optimism. He made friends everywhere he went and was still cracking jokes with the nurses in his final days. He loved sports, especially football, and held season tickets to Weber State for decades. He endured many “building years” from the Green Bay Packers and taught us never to despair in the opening quarters because “we’re a second-half team”. Marvin had a green thumb and grew enough produce in his small garden to feed an army. He was a fair golfer and a decent fisherman, but he was the greatest grandpa this world has ever seen. To know him was to love him, and we were spoiled with his humor and unconditional love for so many precious years.
Marvin was proud of his Masonic heritage and was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Unity Lodge. He served honorably in the Utah National Guard as a wireman.
Marvin is survived by his dear wife, Raedean; his two daughters, Mary Lena (Denny) Hardy and Marva Rae (Keith) Cordon; seven grandchildren; his beloved “little ones” (his great-grandchildren); and his big brother, Jesse Matthews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; a baby sister; and his sister-in-law, Margaret Matthews.
