William "Bill" Sherwood Coombs

August 12, 1950 — July 14, 2025

William "Bill" Sherwood Coombs, 74, passed away on July 14, 2025, at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on August 12, 1950, at Soda Springs Hospital in Soda Springs, Idaho, to William Laclede Coombs and Margarette Kathleen Box. Bill lived a life defined by dedication to family, service, and faith.

He was raised in Thatcher, Idaho where he worked alongside his father and grandfather on the family farm. He graduated from Grace High School in 1968. In 1971, he married Penny Peterson and they were the parents of four children: Cary, Mindy, Kassy, and Cameron. They later divorced.

Bill married Joan Bingham on November 29, 1991, for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple. Through this union, he gained five bonus children (and two dogs); Nate, Troy, Lisa, Christi, and Brian. He treated and considered them as his own.

Bill was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1972 to 1977. He served with distinction in the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician working on aircraft aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43). His technical expertise and commitment to duty were hallmarks of his service. After leaving the military, Bill returned to farming and later worked at Monsanto Biotechnology Corporation, where he eventually retired. He then became self-employed, founding Sunshine Company Electronics, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. A lifelong learner, Bill earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Integrated Studies from Weber State University, focusing on archaeology, anthropology, and geology.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. He and Joan deeply enjoyed doing temple work together. Bill’s deep faith guided his life and service to others.

Bill enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family and friends fishing, camping, 4-wheeling, boating, and experimenting with his dutch oven. His warmth, wisdom, and love for his family left a lasting impact on all who knew him. Known affectionately as "Gramps," Bill was cherished by his children and grandchildren, who treasured their time with him.

Bill is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Cary, Mindy, Kassy, Cameron (Monica), Nate Hansen (Cami), Troy Hansen (Heather), Lisa Hunsaker (Clay), Christina Bennett (Kris), and Brian Hansen (Amber); and 22 grandchildren. Also survived by his two sisters, Sharon Blake and Loretta Byington; and three brothers, Ken Coombs (Bonnie), Ron Coombs (Carla), and Evan Coombs (Maureen). He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Kathy and Meikaella.
