Listen to Obituary

Wilbur Dean Wilson, affectionately known as WD or Wooper, departed this earthly realm on November 30, 2025, in Ogden, Utah, at the age of 96. Born on April 17, 1929, in Logan, Utah, he lived a life imbued with passion, purpose, and an unwavering dedication to his career as a Petroleum Geologist—a vocation that not only defined his professional journey but also enriched his personal narrative.

Wilbur's academic pursuits began with graduating from Ogden High School. From there he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming, followed by a Master of Arts from the University of Texas. His fervor for learning and intellectual achievement saw him consistently honored on the Dean's List throughout his academic career, a testament to his commitment to excellence.

His profession took him all across the southwest from Roswell, New Mexico; Dallas, Houston, and Midland, Texas. He frequently lent his expertise to organizations such as Humble Oil, Sunoco Oil, and Coquina Oil before embarking on a fulfilling chapter as an Independent Consulting Geologist.

Wilbur's magnetic personality drew people to him for many reasons, one of the most resounding being his ability to tell a story. Up until his final days Wilbur continued to pursue two of his life's greatest passions, Geology and Automobiles.

Surrounded by his loving family, Wilbur passed peacefully, embodying the warmth and wisdom that left a profound impact on those he cherished most. Wilbur is survived by his daughter, Diane Hansen; his brother, Ken Wilson; and his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Craven, Rachelle Johnson, and Cari Vernier; as well as nine great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy.

Wilbur joins the ranks of those who have come before him, cherished and remembered by his late wife, Afton Wilson; father, Dr. Wilburn Wilson; mother, Rebecca Ann Holland; sister-in-law, LuRae Wilson; and his beloved dog, Penni. His loss will be felt deeply, but his spirit will endure in the stories he imparted and in the hearts of all who were touched by his remarkable kindness and generosity. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, let us carry forth his legacy of passion, storytelling, and an unwavering embrace of life's adventure.

The family would like to extend a special acknowledgment to his hospice nurse, Marcie Thomas. They had a special bond, and she added joy and doses of reality to his last year and a half.
