Verlane “Joy” Jung, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family, on March 14, 2026. Joy was born on March 25, 1936, in Hyde Park, Utah, the daughter of Wilhelm and Ida Mae Zilles. She was raised on a farm in Young Ward and enjoyed a childhood filled with love and hard work.
She met the love of her life, August “Larry” Jung, while working at the local ice cream parlor. They were married on September 21, 1956. Larry’s passion for medicine took them across the country, where they welcomed four beautiful children. Eventually, they settled in Farmington, Utah, where they were blessed with nine rambunctious grandchildren.
Joy lived life to the fullest. She had a deep love for horse showing and was inducted into the UQHA Hall of Fame. When she wasn’t in the saddle, she could often be found tending to her many gardens, knitting, cooking, canning, spending time at the cabin, or at one of her many grandchildren’s sporting events. She spent every Sunday surrounded by the thing she loved most—her family.
Joy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her three children: sons Larry Jr. (Beth), Michael (Robbin), and daughter Susan; nine grandchildren, Holden (Austin), Heidi (Darren), Alyssa (Mike), Kelsey (Matthew), Brenden (Mikkall), Hayden (Autumn), Austen “August,” Tanner, and Abby; six great-grandchildren, Adeline, Bronson, Lily, Liam, Sage, and Stetson; and her sister, Linda (Porter).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Ida Mae; sisters Ida “Marie” and Shirley “Ann”; her husband, August “Larry”; her daughter, Christine; and her in-laws, August “Gus” and Johanna.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Nancy, Jodi, and the staff at Country Care, as well as Ovation Hospice nurse Megan, for their compassionate care.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026 from 9:00–10:15 a.m. at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N 400 E. Graveside services will follow at Farmington Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
