Vera May Bailey Ivie

June 6, 1932 — July 7, 2025

SOUTH OGDEN ‒ On July 7, 2025, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, as well as great-great-grandmother, Vera May Bailey Ivie, passed away surrounded by her family who loved and honored her.

Mom was born June 6, 1932, in Provo, Utah to Glen James Bailey and Elvera Marie Jensen. She was their only child. She was raised in Provo, Utah and attended Provo City Schools graduating from Provo High School in 1950.

Our mother married her high school sweetheart, Harold J. Ivie, on June 9, 1951, in Provo, Utah. They were later sealed for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 2, 1952.

Since Mom’s father died when she was just eight years old, she looked forward to marrying and having a large family. They were blessed in having a family, which in time became large. Although we had many challenges as a family, we enjoyed many memorable times together. Because family was so important, our mother went to great lengths to be the glue that held our family together through thick and thin. We are grateful to her for this. She truly was a woman of faith who trusted in our Father in Heaven and in His Son, Jesus Christ. We have all been richly blessed because of her stalwart example and her dedication in living the gospel throughout her life.

Mom’s greatest joy and sense of satisfaction was her family. Together they had six children, five of which are surviving, Cynthia (Robert) Knudsen, Shauna (Brent) Shaw, Harold Andrew Ivie (stillborn), Jerold (Valerie) Ivie, James (Michelle) Ivie, and Ryan (Tara) Ivie.

Our mother cherished each of her children, her 27 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She had a special way of making everyone feel that they were her favorite.

As a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, mom appreciated and loved serving in many capacities throughout her life.

Our mother and father helped many people as lay counselors for 35 years with drug and alcohol abuse. Mom was a member of AMCAP – Association for Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists. Together they gave many classes and seminars on the importance of using the 12-step program, trusting in our higher power, and establishing a positive mental attitude in overcoming drug and alcohol addiction.

In moving 21 times with dad because of his employment with the Union Pacific Railroad, our mother loved getting acquainted with her neighbors by holding luncheons. She made that extra effort to be a friend. In our mother’s eyes, “Once a friend, always a friend.”

It was most certainly a blessing that mom and dad were able to grow old together and have that treasured time where they enjoyed camping, boating, and traveling. They were also blessed to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City on Temple Square. This was undoubtedly one of mom’s most cherished blessings. She had such a love for temple and missionary work.

She also loved caring for her mother the last nine years of her mother’s life. Other interests included being an active member of the Weber County Republican Women, Arts International, Cameo Club, a member of Utah Daughters of Pioneers, and an avid member of the Ogden Athletic Club.

She has certainly been an inspiration to many in sharing life’s lessons and personal insights through the editorials with the Standard-Examiner. She has been a guiding light to all who have known and loved her.

She was preceded in death by our beloved father, Harold J. Ivie; one son, Harold Andrew Ivie; one grandson, Richard Glen Ivie; and her parents.

Yes, July 7, 2025, was a beautiful day especially for Vera May Bailey Ivie, one that she recently anticipated. It was a day most exquisite as she was once again reunited with her beloved sweetheart, her father, her mother, her son that she never knew along with many other dear family members and friends.

Although our family, dear friends, and loved ones will all greatly miss her and the wonderful influence she has always been in our lives, we celebrate her life and the legacy that she has left.

Our family wants to thank all of those at Hidden Valley Assisted Living for their kindness, love, and support as she made their beautiful facility her new home for the past seven years. We also want to thank Serenity Hospice, for their extraordinary care in this last chapter of her life. She surely appreciated those special friendships and loved all those who helped and assisted her.
