Velva "Nanny" Jeanette Brewer

August 27, 1931 — March 28, 2024

Kaysville

KAYSVILLE - Velva stepped into eternity with her Savior and Lord on Thursday, March 28, 2024. She was born to Arthur A. Sr. and Rebecca Hower in Royalton, PA. Whether you knew her as Velva, or Belle, or Nanny, she held a special place in so many hearts.

Velva grew up in Royalton treating her friends after school at the corner shop and enjoying summers with siblings at the cabin on the Susquehanna River. Her first job was working at the Citizens Bank in Middletown, and she graduated from Middletown Area High School.

Velva met Charlie Brewer while in high school and married him in 1949. In 1965 they moved to Utah, and Velva began a career in the Civil Service at Hill Air Force Base where she served as the secretary of the Munitions Division (DSY) for 25 years, earning the title “honorary colonel” for her dedication.

Velva most loved spending time with her family. She was dedicated in loving and serving her neighbors and friends.  She appreciated nature and beauty, happily tending her garden. She always had a word of wisdom to share in the moment. Tenaciously joyful and generous, Nanny wanted above all for others to know the love of Jesus. She would share the truth with anyone who would listen that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

She is survived by daughters Bonnie (Court) Longbrook and Brenda (Dave) Lake; grandchildren Edward (Elizabeth) Mathias, Melissa (Robert) Alles, Rebecca Peterson, Charles (Connie) Mathias, and John (Keri) Mathias; great-grandchildren Kaleb, Skyler, Marcus, Katelyn, Anjali, Sydney, Asha, Elijah, Diya, Hannah, Lillian, Quinn, Josie, and Ella; her brother Arthur Jr.  (Diann) Hower, sister Winnie Ethridge, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Velva was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Charles Brewer, parents Arthur Sr. and Rebecca Hower, brother-in-law H. David Ethridge, son-in-law Ed Mathias, and niece Debee Ethridge.

A celebration of Velva’s life will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville Bible Church, 181 N. Flint Street, Kaysville. Friends may visit the family and say goodbye to Velva beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. There will also be a viewing on Monday, April 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N.
