Valerie Bowles, 69, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully in her home on September 16, 2025. She was born on May 30, 1956, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Janelle Larsen and Virgil Lawrence. Later, Janelle married Monty Montague, who became another wonderful father figure in Valerie’s life. Virgil later married Donna Jean Murphy, who also cared deeply for Valerie.
Valerie married Richard Bowles on July 16, 1976, and together they raised three beautiful daughters. After 26 years of marriage, she later married Eugene Hymers and lived in New York, where she enjoyed exploring historic homes. Valerie eventually returned to Utah to be near her daughters, and in 2007 she made her home in Idaho Falls, where she remained.
Valerie is survived by her loving children Janelle (Keith) Wheadon, Mandy Bowles, and Sarah Hill; her mother Janelle Montague; Jeannie Lawrence; siblings Cindy (Reed) Baron, Brent (Kelly) Lawrence, Bruce (Sherri) Lawrence, Jeff (Wendy) Lawrence, and Christena Davis; and eight cherished grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Virgil Lawrence, stepfather Monty Montague, and other loved ones who welcomed her home.
Valerie had a zest for life and a love of simple joys. She found happiness in drawing, baking, crafting, and playing games with her grandchildren. She made memories with her daughters during their teenage years by taking them on late-night outings to Sconecutter—or even toilet-papering—moments they continue to cherish. She touched many young lives as the founder of Happy Apple Preschool and through her service in numerous callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially her time in the Primary Presidency, where her love of children shone brightly. Professionally, she also held various management positions throughout her career.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Briana Allen for her compassionate care, and to Valerie’s siblings for their loving support.
