Todd Miller

Todd Robert Miller, beloved husband and father, passed away on September 24, 2015 at the age of 48. Todd was known for his dedication to his work, his love of his family, his diligence in serving his community and his inherent knack for building friendships wherever he went.

Todd was born on June 14, 1967 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Robert William Miller and Avey Matheson. He was the first of three children and was warmly welcomed into a loving home. Todd’s upbringing consisted of playing sports, enjoying the outdoors and uplifting those around him through his sense of humor and outgoing spirit. Todd excelled in all types of physical activities including football, basketball, baseball, winter skiing, water skiing and marathon running. Todd’s adventurous spirit was as contagious to his friends as it was to his family.

At the young age of 15, Todd’s father Robert was tragically killed in a car accident leaving Todd as the man of the house. While the loss of his loving father affected him profoundly, Todd found both the courage and determination necessary to become a source of strength to his family and an example to his younger siblings, Stephanie and Sean. Todd brought his family together in a time of crisis and bore the burdens associated with having his youth cut short by circumstances beyond his control.

At age 19, Todd was called to serve an LDS mission in Phoenix, Arizona. Todd was a dynamic missionary who brought many souls to the light of the gospel through his charisma and dedication to the Lord’s work. While serving as an assistant to his mission president, Todd requested, and was granted, a two month extension of his mission in order to bring more souls to Christ. Todd’s devotion to the gospel and his willingness to serve others brought peace and joy to the lives of many and provided him with the necessary foundation to later become a loving husband and father.

In 1992, Todd graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in political science. While attending school, Todd began dating Susan Layton, the younger sister of one of his closest friends Roger Layton. Todd soon recognized his deep love and devotion to Susan and the two were married in the Jordan River Temple on December 15, 1989 after about a year courtship. The couple worked their way through school before bringing their children, Alec Todd (Gunner), Zachary Sean (Boomer), Abigail Katie and Talon Robert into the world. Todd immediately took to his new role as a father and loved his children as dearly as he loved Susan. No matter how tired he was, no matter how much he had going on at the time, Todd never refused his children when they asked for his attention.

Todd always possessed an entrepreneurial spirit. He was also highly particular. After working in several fields for various companies, Todd decided that he would find little satisfaction in working for anyone other than himself. Although he lacked any formal training, Todd was determined to start up his own business. In 1995 Todd opened Attention to Detail, an automotive restoration and repair business. Todd always had a strong interest in cars, trucks and motorcycles and Attention to Detail was a perfect fit. Attention to Detail quickly grew and served as a profitable business for many years. In 2013 Todd opened a second business, My Tire Guys, with his two partners. Like Attention to Detail, My Tire Guys quickly grew and today employs 15 people.

Notwithstanding his family, work and church responsibilities, Todd made time to pursue a wide array of interests throughout his life. Todd participated in countless marathons, triathlons and other endurance events. He found great peace and satisfaction while pushing his body to extremes. During his twenties, Todd joined a ski team of Olympic hopefuls and dreamed of competing in the Downhill, Super G, and Giant Slalom events in the winter Olympics. Todd was an accomplished pianist, fisherman, hunter and an avid sports enthusiast as well.

Having lost his own father at such a young age, Todd took his role as a father very seriously. Todd spent countless hours playing catch and practicing sports with his boys while also pouring his attention and deep affection onto his only daughter Abby. Todd served as both a Super League and All Star coach in Alpine, Utah and was instrumental in making competitive baseball what it is today for boys in his community. Todd spent nearly every moment of his free time coaching his children and their various teams. Although he never bragged about his own accomplishments, Todd never tired of praising his children’s effort and abilities.

Todd’s loss will be deeply felt by all those who were fortunate enough to know him. He is survived by his loving wife Susan, his children Gunner, Boomer, Abby and Talon, his mother Avey Matheson Weight, his sister Stephanie (Roger) and his brother Sean (Rebekah).
