Thelma Lou Mahoney Toupin, 96, passed away at her daughter’s home in Washington, Utah on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. She was born on June 12, 1929, in Albion, Idaho, to Curtis G. and Zalona P (Smith) Mahoney. She graduated from Albion High and later attended Albion State Normal School where she received an associate degree in teaching.
Thelma married the love of her life, Don E Toupin, on August 15, 1947, at her parent’s home in Albion. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Thelma loved to sing, she often sang at weddings and funerals. When she met Don, she had just come from singing at a funeral. While in college she performed in many various plays and musical programs.
She was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as the chorister for primary and sacrament. You could often walk past her home and hear her singing and playing the piano.
She taught elementary school for a few years until her first daughter, Pam, was born. When they moved to Ogden, she got a job working at Hill Air Force Base as a secretary until her first son, Gary was born. Her favorite job was being a stay-at-home mom. Returning to work as a lunchroom lady when Randy entered the mission field. Home was always a gathering place for neighbor kids to play, eat, and just hang out. Angela can tell you that often a friend in need of a safe place to stay would show up and the door was always open.
She and Don would travel to Quartzite, AZ every January to April to meet extended family members and enjoy the warmth and lack of snow. After Don passed she moved in with Pam and Carlyle in the St. George area to continue to enjoy the warm weather. Summers, however, were not her favorite!
She enjoyed spending time with any of her grandchildren. Her face would light up when any of them walked into the room or called her. She always had the biggest smile when one of the great-grandchildren called her “Super Grandma”.
Thelma leaves behind four children, Pam (Carlyle) Wacker of Washington, UT, Gary (Beth) Toupin, Farmington, UT, Randy (Colleen) Toupin of Ogden, UT, and Angela (Todd) McBee of Auburn, WA; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and friends too numerous to count. She was preceded in death by her loving husband; parents; and brothers, Bobby and VaDell.
