Listen to Obituary

Teresa Bury Johnston, 77, of Syracuse, Utah, passed away February 20, 2026, at Legacy House of Ogden Assisted Living.

Teresa was born March 15, 1948, in Frankfurt, Germany to Bronislaw and Gertrud Bury.

When Teresa was just 3 years old, her family immigrated to the United States of America through Ellis Island, New York. Her family then relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she spent her childhood and teenage years. At the age of 22, Teresa obtained her U.S. Citizenship of which she was immensely proud.

On March 19, 1966, in Salt Lake City, she married the love of her life and best friend, J. Gary Johnston. The two love birds met on a blind date. Teresa knew from the moment she saw Gary that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. She was always happy to tell people that he was the best thing that ever happened to her. Next month would have been their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Together they had two daughters, Michelle and Melissa. She called them her M & M girls. Gary built their current home in Syracuse where they have lived for 45 years.

Teresa worked as a retail associate at Mervyns for 25 years, where she made some lifelong friendships. After retiring from Mervyns, she became an Administrative Assistant in the Nursing Department at Legacy House of Ogden where she worked for 15 years.

Teresa loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed having her Easter and July 4th parties. She loved having the family over for spaghetti dinners and her homemade buttermilk pancake breakfasts. Teresa loved watching and supporting all her grandkids in their sports and various activities. She was their biggest cheerleader. She spoiled her grandkids with love and attention, and they all thought they were her favorite. She gave them the gift of her time. She enjoyed reading to them, pushing them in her backyard swings, going to the park and feeding ducks.

When she was not busy going to games or getting the family together, she enjoyed bowling, canning fruit, shopping, hiking, going for Razor rides and traveling with her best friend. Her favorite past times at home were crocheting, reading, and doing puzzles.

To know Teresa was to love her. She radiated kindness and love and she accepted everyone. Once you met her, you had a friend for life. She gave the best hugs and made everyone feel welcome and special.

She was of Catholic faith and had a strong belief in Jesus Christ. Her favorite word you could find throughout her home was “Believe.”

Teresa is survived by her best friend and husband, J. Gary Johnston; daughters, Michelle (David) Archuleta of Roy, Utah, and Melissa (Nate) Nielsen of Wellsville, Utah; her grandchildren, LaRissa (Collin) Adams, Tyler (Cortney) Archuleta, Miranda (Rowdy) Stucki, Andrew, Ethan, Jack, and Garret Nielsen; her great-grandchildren, Brinkley, Krew, Legend, Jagger, and Tilly. She is also survived by her brothers, Louie, Eddie, Julian, and Alex Bury.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bronislaw and Gertrud Bury; her brother, Mario Bury; and her in-laws, Ferne and Jack (William Alfred) Johnston.
