Teddy Atencio

August 14, 1953 — June 13, 2025

Teddy Atencio, 71, passed away in Bountiful, Utah. on Friday, June 13, 2025, from an ongoing battle with pneumonia, and kidney failure.

He was born on August 14,1953, to Del Atencio and Ida Medina Atencio.

Teddy was born and raised in Ogden, Utah, as an adult with his career in construction, and project management, he lived in the Provo, UT area, Bountiful, UT, and in Ogden Valley, and the Salt Lake City area. He graduated from Ben Lomond High School, continued education at Washington High School with ongoing studies to prepare for college, and attended Weber State College in Ogden, UT from 1983 to 1985 with studies in Construction Management, Diesel Mechanics, and Welding.

Teddy married Aladene Gutierrez in 1974, and were blessed with a son in March of 1975, David Lynn Atencio. They divorced but still stayed as very good friends. They raised David, and Teddy did stand by and support his family even after the separation.

Aladene passed away in September of 1984 due to a car accident. Ted took full custody of David and raised him to be a great young man with a good heart and strong sense of dedication to family, friends, and work.

Teddy found love and friendship with Carolyn Norton, and they lived together for several years, they later separated. They had quite a bit in common, hunting, fishing, and competed in 4-wheel drive truck competitions, and attending auto races.

Teddy met Jackie Garder in 1983, and they developed a strong friendship. The friendship turned into a strong loving relationship. Teddy and Jackie married on September 21, 1985. They continued raising David, and had two children of their own, Ryan Del Atencio born June 13, 1988, and Michelle Raylnn Atencio, born October 27, 1991. Teddy and Jackie raised their children in the Salt Lake City area, Kearns and West Jordan, UT.

Teddy and Jackie later moved to Layton to be closer to extended family and this is where

Teddy lived out his life. Teddy and Jackie were very dedicated to each other for over 40 years. They enjoyed the outdoors, their home, and vacations. Very seldom would you see one without the other. Ted was Jackie’s rock and foundation, his absence will be felt, not just for Jackie, but all of his family and friends. The relationships are too many to mention currently.

Ted was a member of the Catholic Church and found it as a foundation for life in his childhood. He had great faith in God, and he felt the influence of our Heavenly Father in each day of his life.

Ted was in construction and construction management for many years. He started his management career as a young man in the early 70’s with Interwest Construction, later in life he worked for UCD, and D&W Construction on major projects. He also was a major management influence with Hanney & Hanney Construction. Ted’s ability to get the best out of the employees he managed was a great balancing act. He had strong friendships with the individuals he supervised, and they stayed in touch with his employees all through his life.

When Ted stepped away for Construction, he decided to put his driving skills to work as a CDL Driver, and found a wonderful future with ADS, Advanced Drainage Systems. He retired from ADS in 2022 and went into to Semi-Retirement.

Young Buick GMC was the last stop in his work history, and he worked there part-time as a Shuttle Driver. Once again Ted developed strong friendships with his coworkers at Young Automotive Group, and his presence will be missed.

Ted is survived by his wife, Jackie Atencio; his sons, David Atencio (Jacqueline Urban), Magna, UT; Ryan Del Atencio (Jessica Espinoza Atencio), West Jordan, UT; grandson, Jordan Atencio, Salt Lake City UT; brothers, John Atencio, Brigham City, UT; Steve (Babara) Atencio, Roy, UT; sisters, Shirley Hanney, West Haven, UT; Cora Hall, Portland, OR; Connie Gallegos, West Haven, UT; and Bonnie Cummins, Rock Springs, WY. Teddy also has numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Del Atencio; his mother, Ida Atencio; his daughter, Michelle Raylynn Atencio. Teddy is now with his precious baby girl, and they are rejoicing.
