Susie Hong, age 98, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She lived a long and happy life.
She was born in Toisan, China, to Shum Choy and So Kwen Wong Choy. She married Glen Hong in 1947 and came to Ogden, Utah, to raise a family with her husband. She was a devoted wife and mother who created a loving, supportive, and happy home.
From childhood, she was a voracious reader and loved historical writings. She valued education and inspired us with stories of her experiences studying in Canton away from her family. Her beautiful Chinese calligraphy was displayed at Weber State University for many years. A graceful and precise tai chi practitioner, she enjoyed leading weekly sessions in the community. She celebrated and taught the traditions of her Chinese heritage through delicious food and stories of her life in China. She was kind and self-sacrificing, always thinking of others first. Her quiet strength was the foundation of our family.
Susie is survived by her six children, Fay (Edwin) Andrus, Betty Yamashita (John Dolan), Edwin (Faye) Hong, Jerry (Pat) Hong, Doris Whitaker (Douglas Jenks), and Karen (William) Wallner. She will also be missed by her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her sister, Chun C. Chin; and brother, Kwok Tung Choi.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
