Spencer Joseph Combe, II
January 1, 1949 ~ August 27, 2017
" When you lose somebody you love, you gain an angel you know."
Spencer Joseph Combe II, our beloved father and friend, slipped away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Spencer, or S.J. as he was called by most who knew him, was born on January 1, 1949 to loving parents Spencer Joseph Sr. and Florence Combe. Weighing only three and a half pounds, he always joked that he slept in a shoebox for the first few months of his life. Growing up, S.J. loved the outdoors and spent most of his youth and teen years playing baseball, fishing, cultivating lifelong friendships, and causing mischief in his childhood neighborhood. As he grew older, his passion for baseball faded and golf soon became his favorite pastime. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1967 and from there went on to study at Weber College.
He married Peggy Louise Harbertson in May of 1977, and gained two daughters, Lori and Lisa. After completing his bachelors, the small family journeyed across the country to allow Spencer to attend anesthesia school at the Jersey Shore Medical School. S.J. went on to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and the family returned to Utah to make many memories on Malan Avenue. Son, Christopher, and daughter, Chelsey-Ann, were later born adding to the little family and they soon moved to a wonderful neighborhood on Ben Lomond Avenue where many friendships were formed.
Throughout the year, S.J. enjoyed dinner parties, rafting the Snake River, golfing, fly fishing, skiing, traveling to his favorite places such as Sun Valley, Jackson Hole, and Yellowstone National Park, and enjoying the unconditional friendships of his best buddies Boyd, Bruce, Dean, Scott, Greg, and many others. Spencer proudly served his country as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, first as a traffic controller then later as a medical specialist. Passionate in everything he did, S.J. thrived in his work, and enjoyed putting nervous patients at ease with his playful, wry sense of humor. Music often floated from his basement as he lost himself in his acoustic guitar renditions of his favorite bands such as Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles. Golfing as often as life allowed, he and his son Chris bonded through the sport and made a formidable duo winning countless tournaments over many years.
S.J. deeply cherished his children and grandchildren: Madison, Collin, Grayson, Hayden, and Liv Louise. Going for hot cakes on weekends, reminiscing on the past, reading stories, cheering at soccer games, attending car shows and browsing new car lots were parts of being a parent and grandparent he loved the most.
S.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Spencer and Florence Combe; and his beloved wife of 24 years, Peggy Louise (Harbertson) Combe. He is survived by his children: Lori (Dave) Gagnon, Lisa (Bruce) Frazier, Christopher (Heidi) Combe, and Chelsey (Aaron) Loredo; five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter on the way; sisters: Lael (Ralph) Ferguson, and Terry Johnson; and his wife Michelle (Clove) Combe.
Adored by many and a genuine friend to all who crossed his path, there is no doubt that S.J. will be profoundly missed by all who knew him! He never went any place without running into someone he knew and no matter how much time had passed, he always managed to pick up right where they left off.
His many friends may visit with the family on Friday, September 8, 2017, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, family is asking that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in care of “Win Win in Memory of S.J. Combe” and can be mailed to 3005 South Scott Lane, West Haven, Utah 84401.
