Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sonya Campbell passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and was reunited with William Campbell, her husband of over 63 years. Sonya was born on February 17, 1936, to Hugh Barber Wilcox and Wanda Stoker Wilcox. Sonya lived a long, happy, and blessed life even though there were struggles throughout. She had many interests including cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, crafts, piano, and teaching. Sonya enjoyed spending time with family above all else both in her younger years and later with her own family as it grew. She was never happier than when she held a new baby and was enamored with each and every grandchild and great-grandchild as she was introduced to them.
Sonya went to Davis High School and was a graduate of both Weber State University and Brigham Young University and supported all of these schools throughout her years. She put her teaching degree to good use as a First Grade Teacher until she met and married William Campbell and quit to have and raise her six children. The family grew and moved around several times until they finally settled back in Utah and eventually spent most of their years in Layton, Utah. She was a devoted mother and was able to provide love to all her children equally, so that each felt cherished and supported at all times. This love was also evident as she became a grandmother and great-grandmother as she was always available to support all in her family in whatever needed and instinctively knew what would make any situation feel better and all would come away feeling encouraged and loved. When she saw any of the grandchildren her smile would light up the room.
She was an amazing housewife maintaining a rigorous schedule of caring for her family and always ensuring they were well-fed, clothed, and cared for. She also provided care for other children over the years to supplement the family income as well as doing wedding dress alterations for many years.
She was a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many positions in Primary, Relief Society, Scouting, and Sunday School. She always stated she was an introvert but was always willing to stop and spend time with someone needing to be uplifted and provide compassionate guidance even if she didn’t know them.
Sonya is survived by her brother, Ken Wilcox (Alice); sisters-in-law, Sherry (Marlo) Wilcox, Lanae (Ted) Wilcox, and Sandra (David) Campbell; her four sons, Shawn (Lisa) Campbell, Brett (Lorna) Campbell, Jaren (Pat) Campbell, Ryan (Moani) Campbell; two daughters, Jodi (Bryan) Butler, Katrina (Tyler) Passey; thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Sonya was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh B. Wilcox and Wanda S. Wilcox; husband, William A. Campbell; and brothers Marlo Wilcox and Ted Wilcox.
