Kaysville – in loving memory of Shirley Jeane Pietz McDaniel age 94. Shirley had been suffering from declining health for the past two years; she passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026, in Layton, Utah due to complications of old age.
Shirley was born December 30, 1931, in Belmont Township, Jackson, Minnesota to Elmer August Pietz and Myrtle Emma Rebecca Rue. She was raised on a farm outside of Comfrey, Minnesota and enjoyed playing with animals. She loved attending school as a youth. Her interests were sewing, reading, writing, outdoor activities, playing the clarinet in band, as well as various other school activities. She graduated from High School in Comfrey, Minnesota and was the valedictorian of her class. She received an associate's degree in Elementary Education from Mankato Teachers College in 1951. She moved to Dunwoody Girls Club in Minneapolis in 1952 and enjoyed working for various companies. She met and dated Francis Arnold McDaniel while rooming with his sister Ruth. They married on May 26, 1956, at the First Congregational Church in Comfrey, Minnesota. After their marriage they raised their 7 children in Robbinsdale, Minnesota where life as a busy mother was a revolving door of school and church activities, babysitting, church and recreational sports, neighborhood friends, etc. In 1995 they retired and moved to Kaysville, Utah to be closer to family.
Shirley joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1959. Her marriage to Francis was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple in1962. She was an active member of the LDS church and fulfilled various church callings. She loved working on her genealogy and volunteered at the Kaysville Genealogy Library for many years. She served an LDS mission with her husband in San Jose, CA, in 2000.
Shirley loved her family and relatives deeply and enjoyed gathering with everyone for meals, visits, and vacations. She had a quiet, calm, accepting, kind, and patient personality as well as a warm smile, a listening ear, and a contagious laugh. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her children Steven (Eileen) McDaniel, Jessup, MD, Julene (Jay P.) Morgan, Shadow Hills, CA, Nancy (Michael) Tebbs, Layton, UT, James (Angie) McDaniel, Layton, UT, Mary (Hugh) Marstella, Kaysville, UT, John (Mary) McDaniel, Cedar Hills, UT, and Teresa Sosa, Marriott-Slaterville, UT; 28 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, parents Elmer and Myrtle, and siblings Kenneth, Kermit, Donna, Donald, Robert, and James.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary Chapel, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah. Family and friends may visit Saturday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary prior to the service.
Internment will be held at the Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 East Crestwood Road, Kaysville, Utah.
