Sherry Telford Schmid

Sherry Telford Schmid, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away September 2, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by her children.

Sherry was born April 3, 1943, in Salt Lake City to Robert and Beth Telford. She was an only child and greatly loved by her parents. While her father served in WWII, she and her mother lived with family in Woodruff during Sherry’s first years. The family later settled in Montpelier, Idaho, which became home to Sherry and her parents.

She graduated from Bear Lake High School and attended Utah State College in Logan, Utah.

In 1963 she was crowned “Days of ’47 Queen” as part of the Pioneer Day celebrations in Utah. She moved to Salt Lake City that year and enjoyed the various responsibilities and duties of serving in that role.

She married John Richard “Dick” Schmid on April 24, 1964, in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had been married 58 cherished years at the time of our dad’s passing in 2022. She felt blessed to not only gain a husband, but also Dick’s parents and his sisters and their husbands who she dearly loved.

In her later years as her memory faded, she still had vivid memories of this time of her life and loved to recount her experiences of winning the Days of ’47 pageant and dating and marrying our father who truly was the love of her life.

Sherry and Dick started their family in Utah with the births of Mark and Stephanie before moving to Ames, Iowa where Dick continued his education at Iowa State University. Nancy was welcomed to the family in Iowa. After finishing his education in Iowa, they made their home in the Ogden area and the last of their four children John was born.

Growing up an only child, Sherry wanted a large family and her 4 children, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren were Sherry and Dick’s greatest source of joy.

Sherry was the best mother and grandmother we could have asked for. Sherry and Dick supported their children and grandchildren and did all they could to see them succeed. They made spending time with family a priority and taught us through their great example. They made family and service a focus of their lives.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She was an example of pure service, impacting many through her service in ward and stake callings. She loved serving in the Ogden Temple and especially helping new brides on their wedding day.

Sherry was a perfectionist and held herself to a high standard in everything she did. She was an amazing cook, and her recipes are continued to be enjoyed two generations later. She would make delicious dishes using produce from Dick’s garden each summer. She would can fruits and vegetables to be enjoyed all year long. She volunteered in Labor and Delivery at McKay Dee Hospital and handmade clothes for premature babies.

She kept an orderly, clean, and welcoming home and always made family and visitors feel welcome and loved. She could make nearly anything. She was an amazing seamstress and enjoyed making items for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She made beautiful and delicious birthday cakes for her children as they were growing up. She started many traditions including our family’s gingerbread making party each year.

Sherry and Dick loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with Dick’s sisters and their husbands as well as trips with cherished friends.

Sherry is survived by three children, Stephanie (Craig) Tonks, Nancy (Justin) Mott, and John (Amy) Schmid; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Kindley, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and another that will be joining us soon. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Spencer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Schmid; her son, Mark Schmid; her parents; sisters-in-law, Mary Harding and Helen Bassett; and brothers-in-law, James Harding, James Spencer, and Bill Bassett.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, at 3:30 p.m. at the Montpelier Cemetery, Montpelier, Idaho.
