Sherlene Holmes Wood

It is with heavy hearts that we say ‘goodbye for now’ to Sherlene Holmes Wood, who passed away on December 5, 2024, at home. Sherlene was born on November 19, 1940, in Brigham City, Utah to Ralph Gideon Holmes and Lydia Maxine Orem and was the oldest of five girls. She moved to Clearfield at the age of 8 and later graduated from Davis High School. 

She was married and blessed with four children. Later she divorced but was always grateful to have had the opportunity to be a mother. She loved children and often helped tend to other children in the family. Sherlene was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose family was her greatest joy. If she had someone to talk to, you could bet she was doting on one of her family members! This included fond memories she had of extended family members like uncles, cousins, nieces etc. Sherlene was blessed to spend so much time with her parents in their later years and often spoke of how much she missed them. She was also very active in her grandkid’s lives, attending games, recitals and birthday parties. 

Sherlene found much joy in her places of employment as well. She spoke fondly of her time working at Hallmark where she started many collections including Christmas ornaments and holiday decorations. However no other job could compare to her 30+ years working at Trace Minerals Research. There Sherlene (or ‘Sher’) found her second family. She spoke of her many co-workers often and with great love.

Sherlene loved to share her appreciation for the beauty of the earth with those she loved, especially a breathtaking sunset! Taking drives to admire nature was one of her favorite things to do. She also had a passion for learning, always eager to expand her knowledge through watching Jeopardy! playing trivia games and exploring the world via TV documentaries, particularly anything about Egypt.

Sherlene had a unique balance of interests, loving the thrill of the horror genre with a fascination for all things Stephen King and The Walking Dead, while also nurturing a passion for musical theater. She cherished attending plays with family and fondly remembered the days when she loved to dance as a young woman. Those who knew her well can picture her with her can of Coke, air-popped popcorn, books on her side table and a TV show that she couldn’t wait to tell everyone about!

Sherlene is survived by her sons, Jeff Wood (Linda) and Brett Wood (Heidi); daughters, Annette McLaughlin (Thomas) and Danise McGavin (Mike); 8 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three of her sisters, Georgia (Lee), Irene (Rod), and Lorraine. 

Sherlene was preceded in death by her father, Ralph G. Holmes; mother, Maxine Holmes; and sister, Barbara Blackwood.

The family would like to extend special thanks to her Trace Minerals family for adopting her as the ‘company grandma’ and making her feel so loved Dr. Carl Christiansen for his compassionate care, and Danise and Mike McGavin for their devoted caretaking and love.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Clinton City Cemetery, 813 North 750 West, Clinton. Friends may visit with family on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Syracuse Mortuary. 869 South 2000 West, Syracuse. And Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 at the mortuary. 

Sherlene will be greatly missed but leaves this earthly life with many cherished memories and relationships.
