Sheila Rae Barney Huff, age 77, passed away peacefully in her home on January 15, 2023- her forever companion, Larry, and her faithful pup Yao Ming by her side. She was born on March 9, 1945 in Payson, Utah, and grew up primarily in Genola, Utah. She married her high school sweetheart, Larry Huff, on June 24, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Sheila knew the impact of education, and highly encouraged that in others. She graduated from Payson High School in 1963, and from Holy Cross School of Nursing in 1966. Interesting to note- she was the very first married student in their prestigious program! Even though the super strict nuns slightly terrified her, she grew to highly respect them, and the lessons learned.
Sheila valued hard work; she thrived and was so happy while she was working, and incidentally, she was very distressed when her health issues took away her ability to work as a nurse. She worked at many hospitals in her 37-year career- LDS Hospital, Cottonwood Hospital, IMC, the Atomic Energy Commission to name a few, and her highly specialized nursing career gave her so many opportunities to teach and even care for many General Authorities and church leaders- President Hunter, President Kimball, and oh how she loved her friendship with Sister Camilla Kimball! Sheila had expertise in placing PICC lines, as a head nurse, in surgery, recovery, home health care, and she actively taught while she cared for others.
She had a pet deer as a small child- Bambi and was not happy when her furry friend suddenly disappeared…. She truly adored horses, cats, her beloved dogs, gardening, gem stones, jewelry, reading, crafts, creating strange, yet yummy recipes, spontaneous vacations, her siblings and parents and her Heavenly Father. She forever cherished the memories of their two trips to China- she valued vacations where she could learn and experience something new.
Her greatest calling and titles, however, were Mom, Nana, and Great Nana. Supporting her kids and encouraging them to follow their dreams brought her the most happiness. From dance to football, cheerleading, soccer, cross country, and piano, she would watch, coach, critique, cheer on, and simply believe in her kids. She was devoted to loving and supporting her kids and grandkids.
This always cheerful, optimistic lady is survived by her husband Larry Huff; her four children: Patrick Huff (Nanette), Jana Shaw-Van Buren (Troy), Ryan Huff (Paula), and Suzette Stewart (Charlie Parker); her seven siblings: Laraine Toone (John), Rex Barney (Jamie), Joy King, Gale Judd (Stan), Janean Newton (Cory), Bill Barney (Kris), and Crystal Fox (Steve). She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Viola Barney and her great grandson, Jeffery Martin.
