Sgt. Karl Sampson Powell

May 30, 1963 ~ October 2, 2021

Sgt. Karl Sampson Powell, age 58, passed away peacefully in his home on October 2, 2021. He was born May 30, 1963, in Bakersfield, California, to Dwight Sampson and Deanna Barnum Powell. He was a 1981 graduate of Bingham High School. He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina.

He married Kathleen Beryl Fisher on December 5, 1986 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Karl worked as a junior high and high school teacher, teaching speech, debate, and Spanish. He retired from teaching Spanish at Rocky Mountain Jr. High in 2018.

Karl cherished the time he spent in the temple and loved working in housekeeping at the Ogden Temple. He loved the peaceful feelings and spiritual moments he experienced there. He also worked at Ogden Preparatory Academy, teaching younger children, which was a new and enjoyable experience. He missed the kids and staff after he was unable to return to work.

Karl was a loving and devoted father to his children, sharing the gospel in his home as well as at church every opportunity he had. He served in the Army National Guard and completed a tour at the 2002 Winter Olympics, and a tour in 2003 to 2004 in Iraq. He was regularly involved in political events within his community. He loved his country and the freedom that his country stood for.

Karl loved spending time with his kids, playing family games, sports, and coaching their soccer teams. He supported his wife and family in all their ambitions. He was truly an equal partner who “presided over his family in love and righteousness.”

Karl is survived by his wife, Kathleen Beryl Fisher of Farr West; and five children, Amanda (Nick) Clark, David “Eric” Powell, Patricia (Cayden) Gray, Noah Powell, Max Trask; four grandchildren; his father, Dwight Sampson Powell; and his two brothers, Kevin (Nancy) Powell, and Kraig (Kim) Powell.
