Layton, Utah- Sarah Jane Hollinger Patterson, beloved Mother, Grandmother (Gram), Sister and Aunt slipped away peacefully from this earthly world, to the next, surrounded by loved ones on December 16, 2025. A host of angels and loved ones welcomed her as she completed her earthly journey.
Sarah was born on January 27th, 1935, in Ursine (Eagle Valley), NV to Samuel James Hollinger and Elva Udora Leavitt. She moved to Layton, UT and worked for an Accounting Firm in Ogden, UT. Sarah was excellent with money and could really stretch a penny. She was set up on a blind date by her sister, where she met the love of her life, Don Patterson. They were married a few months later on December 20, 1958, in Layton, UT, where they settled down and raised their three beautiful children together until his early passing in 1981. They were later sealed in the temple on April 29, 1994.
Don and Sarah loved planting beautiful flowers, hunting, camping, bowling, listening to music, going to the movies, and dancing in the living room together. They were soul mates and had such a loving marriage.
Sarah loved reading and oftentimes would tune the world out around her as she escaped into her books. She would exchange books with her sister Ruth. She loved to sew, do crossword puzzles and word searches, make up little ditties that she would sing, April fools’ pranks, hopscotch with her grandchildren, ice cream, and giggling. She loved talking on the phone with loved ones and catching up on everyone's families. She loved attending concerts in the park. She enjoyed sitting out on her porch and watching as the neighbors went about their lives, always making sure to smile and wave as people passed. Sarah was known as the neighborhood grandma. She would touch your soul with her gentle smile and the twinkle in her eyes. There truly has never been a kinder, more selfless, loving human. She was a silent warrior and hated being in the limelight. She was always doing kind deeds for others without their knowledge. Sarah was a HUGE Utah Jazz fan and was known to yell and scream at the screen, cheering on the team. More than anything, Sarah devoted her life to caring for her family. Nothing made her more proud than her family. She was the matriarch of all matriarchs. The loudest cheerleader on the sidelines. She gleamed with joy and pride when she was surrounded by loved ones. She loved fiercely and had such an inviting spirit that she made friends everywhere she went.
Sarah spent her life serving others. She loved and cherished her job as an aide on a school bus for special needs children for over 35 years. She loved each and every one as if they were her own, and they loved her. We're sure those special spirits were there to greet her when she left her earthly body. She also served valiantly as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had many callings including: Sunday School, Primary, Relief Society, Young Women's, and the Library. Sarah believed in the power of prayer and was known to always pray for others, especially when they were in need. Her faith in prayer was unwavering.
Sarah is survived by her children: Scott Patterson, SLC, UT; Tani Grimes (Kevin), Layton, UT; Cindy Patterson, Layton, UT. Her sister, Ruby Lister, sister-in-law, Myrna Hollinger. Her five grandchildren: Britney, Cody, Shane, Shandee, and Skylar. Her 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
