ROY “MICK” PLATT HOWARD

1933-2017

Roy Platt Howard left this earth on November 7, 2017 surrounded by family with his loving wife at his side.  He lived a beautiful life and had a peaceful and loving death.

He was born May 3, 1933 in Richfield, Utah to Florence and Roy Howard.  He beat his twin sister into the world by seconds.  The twins known as “Mickey and Minnie” had a happy childhood in Sigurd, Utah-- tap dancing, fishing and playing in the band.

Roy was a proud veteran of the Korean War.  He joined the Navy after graduating from Richfield High and sailed on the USS Silverstein DE.  January 22, 1966 he married Carolyn Joan Wood at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Phoenix, AZ.  Following a brief honeymoon in Vegas, they relocated to Bountiful, Utah for Roy’s job at the Salt Lake City Air Traffic Control Center.  Roy was an Air Traffic Controller for 33 years.  His calm demeanor and grace under pressure made him great at this high stress job.  He retired in 1987 and went back to work 3 days later as an instructor.  He retired for good in 1996 and has spent the last years traveling, trying his luck at the slot machines and enjoying time with family and friends.

Above all he was a kind, good man.  He worked hard and put others needs above his own.  He loved his family, fishing and hunting, cheering for the U of U, traveling, playing Yahtzee, and a good steak, not necessarily in that order.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Roy Platt Howard Sr. and his daughter, Heather.  He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Carolyn Joan Howard; his twin sister Florence “Minnie” Anderson (Charles); daughters, Terrilynn Thorn, Jodi Ann Howard (Mike Brown),  Jennifer  Jo Cannon (Keith); 12 grandchildren, 10 ½  great-grandchildren;  numerous nieces and nephews; and countless good friends.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Olaf Catholic Church, 1800 S. Orchard Dr. Bountiful, UT.  Visitation will be at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. Bountiful on Friday, November 10th from 6-7:30 p.m. and Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.  Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery on Monday, November 13th at 10:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to Saint Olaf Catholic Church or St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.
