It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ross Raymond Thomason, age 69, who left this world peacefully on June 21, 2025, at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah, surrounded by the love of his children. Born on July 16, 1955, at St. Benedict's Hospital in Ogden, Utah, Ross was the cherished son of Fred and Carol Thomason.
Ross grew up in Layton, Utah, where he developed a love for history and storytelling that would stay with him throughout his life. He graduated from Layton High School in 1973 and later served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Atlanta, Georgia, a time that shaped his faith and character. Upon returning, he met the love of his life, Cathy Wilson, and they were married and sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 16, 1977. Following their marriage, Ross fulfilled his lifelong dream of serving his country by joining the U.S. Marine Corps, where he proudly served with honor.
Ross had a passion for life that was evident in everything he did. He enjoyed camping and hiking, often finding solace in nature. His love for movies spanned genres, from Westerns and war films to sci-fi, fantasy, and Disney classics, with a particular fondness for the thrill of zombie stories. He was a creative soul, often seen working in his yard, crafting walking sticks, and engaging in various art projects that brought joy to those around him.
Known for his stubbornness, Ross also possessed a heart full of forgiveness and compassion. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, embodying the spirit of service and kindness. His greatest joy came from his family, especially his 17 grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Ross is survived by his six beloved children: Stephanee (Jarin) Smith, Rachel (Jacob) Taft, Jennifer (Christopher) McGarry, Sean (Dixie) Thomason, Joseph (Chantel) Thomason, Candice (Brian) Gibby, and 17 grandchildren.
He has been reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Cathy, his precious granddaughter Emma, and his parents who are dearly missed.
In the words of Clint Eastwood, “I tried being reasonable, I didn’t like it.” Ross lived life on his own terms, and his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering love, strength, and the countless memories he created with his family and friends.
