Roberta Hubbard Costley Palmer

Roberta Palmer, "Grandma Bert", age 97, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2012. She was born in Conant, Idaho, September 28, 1914 to Jesse L. and Estelle Beecher Hubbard. They moved to Ogden when she was 5, and she attended school there, graduating from Ogden High School.

She married Virgil R. Costley on November 21, 1933, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Ogden in four homes, all in the Ogden 10th Ward. Virgil died on November 1, 1969. She later married Birch Palmer, who passed away May 7, 1983.

Roberta was active in the church, and at age 12 taught Junior Sunday School and lead the singing. She later had many callings including YWMIA President and teaching a youth Sunday School class.

She and Virge loved fishing and traveling, going on lots of road trips. After he died, she continued to travel, going with tour groups, especially temple tours. She has been all over the U.S., to the Holy Land, the South Pacific, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand.

She worked as a secretary all her life: at Personal Finance, Beneficial Finance, McKesson and Robbins, and finally at the Weber School District.

Roberta started working in Genealogy in 1955 helping her dad. She continued doing research, and has submitted thousands of names for temple work. As each of her great-grandchildren turned 12, she had family names for them to do Baptisms for the Dead. Then photos were taken and a breakfast enjoyed at Denny''s. The past few years she has loved doing genealogy work from home on her computer. She also loved corresponding by e-mail with lots of friends and relatives.

She loved staying busy. When she watched TV, she was always knitting slippers or crocheting afghans or her famous doilies, which she gave as wedding gifts. Her greatest love, however, was her family.

Surviving are her daughter, Gwen (John) Stevens; five grandchildren: Debra (David) Kaminsky, Julie (Lee) Bouwhuis, Jeffrey (Karen) Stevens, Sheri (Clayton) Anderson, and Shauna (Stan) Smith; 20 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ida Hoggan; brother, Oren Hubbard, and sisters-in-law, Elsie and Jo Costley.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands; three brothers, Afton, Eldon and Ronald Hubbard; and a great-great-granddaughter Ashton Kaminsky.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Plain City 7th Ward, 2952 North 4200 West. Friends may visit family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
