Richard Moore Sorensen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and an honorable veteran, peacefully passed away on August 7, 2025, at his home in West Haven, Utah. In his final days, he was surrounded by his cherished family. Born on August 12, 1937, in Ogden, Utah, Richard lived a life rich in service and love.
For 30 remarkable years, Richard dedicated himself to his work at Hill Air Force Base, where he meticulously contributed to the maintenance and care of aircraft. His steady hands and keen insights were well-respected in his profession. After retiring from the Air Force Base, he continued to serve his community through his roles at McKay Dee Hospital as a lab courier, a position that brought him immense joy and fulfillment. It was said that he not only performed his duties with great enthusiasm but also left a lasting positive impression on those around him.
Richard’s military service was characterized by loyalty and pride. He served honorably in the Marine Corps, then later supported the Air Force during the Vietnam War as a DoD employee. He vividly recounted his time on aircraft carriers during his reenlistment in the Navy Reserves, witnessing important moments in history. A proud patriot, Richard embodied the values he stood for throughout his life, reinforced with dedication and love for his country.
He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held a strong testimony of the gospel and the teachings of Jesus Christ. His faith was a guiding light for him and his family, and he instilled that same belief in his loved ones.
Richard was known for his wit and humor, qualities that brought laughter into the hearts of many. His family gatherings were filled with love and joy, where food was abundant, and stories were shared, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Richard's fierce love for his wife and children was evident to all; to him, they could do no wrong. His legacy of love extended to his large posterity, who brought him immeasurable happiness.
An avid reader, Richard had a particular fondness for World War II history and novels. He enjoyed the thrill of literature, often waiting until the last chapter of one book to pick up another, always eager to be whisked away into new worlds and stories. He also enjoyed wood working and often “made lots of saw dust.”
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Lonna; his children, David (Patricia) Sorensen, Amy (Todd) Crossley, Susan (Larry) Smalley, Jennifer (Michael) Pitt, and Nathan (Corie) Sorensen; as well as eighteen grandchildren and nine (and a half) great-grandchildren, all of whom carry on his spirit of kindness and strength. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Bernice Sorensen.
As we remember Richard, we hold dear the lessons he taught us: the importance of family, the value of service, and the power of laughter. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
