Richard Barnes Major LTC, U.S. Army

August 17, 1933 ~ May 23, 2016

Richard Barnes Major was born in Ogden, Utah to Lewis R. and Josephine Barnes Major.

He attended schools in Davis County and graduated in 1951 from Davis High School. He then attended USU on a scholarship and served an LDS Mission in the Central Atlantic States from 1953-1955.

He married Carol Larsen on March 16, 1956 and completed his education at USU.  He graduated in 1958 and was awarded an RA Commission as the Distinguished Military Graduate.   He entered the U.S. Army upon graduation and served valiantly until 1979.  He was awarded the following medals for his service to our country: 4 Bronze Stars, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Medal of Valor (Vietnam), Honor Medal with Silver Star (Vietnam), Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and Parachute Wings.  He served on many Army Posts throughout the U.S.A. and in the Panama Canal Zone, Ankara, Turkey and had 2 tours in Vietnam.

He died May 23, 2016 at the George Wahlen Veteran’s Home after a two year heroic struggle with service related disabilities.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, three sons, R. Keith (Elise), Douglas L. (Janet), David W. (Kristina), 11 grandchildren, Richard, Kathy (Peter) Davis, Scott (Elizabeth), Jonathan, Sarah, Eric, Michael, Elizabeth, Brynn, Karissa (Robert) Illu, Morgan, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son James L. Major.

We are extremely grateful for the outstanding care he received from the staff at George Wahlen and Bristol Hospice and for the many friends and relatives who have served his needs with love and concern.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main.  Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
