Reed Stimpson Harris

LAYTON a€" The world will miss Reed Stimson Harris, who passed away peacefully after an extended illness on March 2, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Reed was born May 24, 1921 on Easy Street (now Hill Field Road) in Layton, Utah. He was born at home, the third in a family of eight children, to Ezra P. and Emma G. Harris.

Reed excelled in many sports, graduating from Davis High School in 1940.

He was an Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When he was young his M.I.A. class was challenged to read the Book of Mormon. Reed was the first boy to finish it. When WWII started, he enlisted in the USMC, served in the "Mormon Battalion", and was stationed in the South Pacific. He was very patriotic and served about four years with his three brothers.

Reed loved horses and was in the Davis County Posse for years. He raised as well as raced horses, and participated in rodeos in cattle roping. In his garden he raised the best tomatoes in Utah, winning 1st place at the State Fair. He also did the cattle drive from Monte Cristo to Harris Peak each year.

People were drawn to Reed. Because of his friendly, warm personality he had many friends. As a result of Macular Degeneration, Reed lost his eye sight, but this didn''t stop him from playing golf, a game he loved. He even managed to get two holes-in-one while blind. He was always ready for a challenge. "Dad, we will miss you."

After WWII he married Lola Berry, who preceded him in death on February 26, 1973. He then married Sylvia Lee, who passed away January 7, 2012.

Surviving are one daughter RaNee (Jim) Hatch of Kaysville, and one son Michael Reed (Brenda) Harris of Moab. Also surviving are grandchildren Teresa Ann Horrocks, Robert Reed Pyper, Justin Hatch, Josh Roger Reed Harris, Amber Rae Ann Harris, sisters, Roberta Fronk, Tremonton; Colleen (Ken) Bowman, Salt Lake City; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Willis Harris, Eugene Harris, and Delbert S. Harris.
