Ray “Chip” Enniss beloved Husband, Father, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Uncle, Friend and trapshooting mentor to many passed away peacefully, on Wednesday July 2, 2025, embraced by his loving wife and daughter.
Chip, as he was known to family and friends, was born January 29, 1945. The youngest child of Elmer Mar Enniss and Beatrice Mae Osborne Enniss. He grew up on a farm in Draper, UT and loved riding horses and hunting jack rabbits all along the mountain side surrounding his home. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1963, and married the love of his life, Gaylene Kemp on June 25, 1965. They moved to San Diego, CA in 1969 to raise a family and work alongside his brother in the heavy equipment and crane industry. He graduated from Ironworking school in 1972 and had a very successful career rigging thousands of high-profile crane jobs, running cranes and later being a Crane salesman for Bob’s Crane Service in Lakeside, CA where he retired in 2014. A hard worker and great provider for his family, he also ran a cultured Marble business from approximately 1979-1988 where he poured custom shower and bathtub surrounds, as well as countertops for many houses in the San Diego area.
His biggest passions in life were Trapshooting and his family, perhaps in that order. His happiest moments were when he could combine the two and shoot with his family, both blood and chosen. He joined the American Trapshooting Association in 1967 and very quickly rose to the 27 Yard line for Handicap. Over his lifetime he shot 87,400 Singles targets with an average of 97.37%; 116,100 Handicap Targets with an average of 88.84%; and 74,600 Doubles targets with an average of 93.25%. He was selected as a member of the California State Team several times over his lifetime, was ranked tenth in the nation and was inducted into the California State Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame in 2019.
He opened Target Tossers Gun Club in San Ysidro, CA in 1989 where he found a new shooting passion in Sporting Clays. Thinking about and building crazy, fun and difficult courses for his friends and patrons always made his eyes light up. From placing an aluminum boat on springs to digging a six-foot deep pit or building a fifteen-foot tower; as well as trying out all the latest clay target designs to see what flew how he envisioned. When Target Tossers closed in 1994 due to the Otay Ranch Development Project, he became the proud coach of several high school shooting squads out of San Diego Shotgun Sports in Miramar, CA for several years. Sharing his passion and knowledge of the sport to anyone who wanted to learn.
Wanting to return to the mountains and beautiful scenery of his childhood, as well as be closer to his baby girl, Chip and Gaylene relocated back to the Salt Lake Valley in 2016 and resided in Layton, UT for the rest of his days. He enjoyed driving around and telling stories of the ‘good old days’ before so many houses and businesses covered his childhood hunting grounds.
His competitive nature was not only seen on the trap field. He was a sucker for any type of card game, from Poker with friends to Go-fish with the kids. When he won, it was always due to his superior ability, but if you won you were just lucky! He was strong, proud, cantankerous at times, hilarious when he wanted to be and had the biggest heart of any man around. He worked hard for everything he received in life and instilled the same in his children. He taught all four of his children to be strong, independent, problem solvers to which they are all grateful. “Atta Boy Girl!”
Chip is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Mac Enniss and Reid (Delpha) Enniss; and sisters Vonna (Harold) Vawdrey, Vae (Merlyn) Dansie, and Enid Enniss. He is survived by his wife Gaylene Enniss and their 4 children: Randy Enniss of Lakeside, CA; Marc Enniss of Reno, NV, Mike Enniss of Ramona, CA and Tara Enniss of Syracuse, UT; 6 grandchildren: Travis (Austin) Phillips of Carson, NV; Kaily (Reese) Kilgour of Ramona, CA; Danye (Terynn) Archuletta of Fallon, NV; Shawnee (Isaac) Cannady of Fallon, NV; Kaleb (Makenna) Enniss of Lamoille, NV; and Ashley Enniss of Ramona, CA; 9 great-grandchildren (with one on the way); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
