He was born on December 31, 1931, in Logan, Utah to George Henry Coleman and Alta Leora Egan. He grew up in Smithfield, Utah attending Summit Elementary and Smithfield Junior High with his older brother Val and younger brother Gene. Later younger brothers Merrit and Randy rounded out the family. He graduated from North Cache High School in 1950.

His first three children, Ann, Jon and Ross, were born in South Ogden, before the family moved to Roy in 1962 where they lived for the next 63 years. Children Daren, Robert and Evan “Fritz” were born in Ogden and raised with the rest of the children in Roy.

He also served in the Bishopric of the Roy 15th Ward, as a Temple Worker in the baptistry at the Ogden Temple, as a Church Service Missionary in the Bishops Storehouse and Cannery in Ogden and as a Church Farm Missionary with his close friend Allen Zaugg at the Roy Grape Farm.
