Listen to Obituary

Phyllis Eksund Slater, 1937-2026, was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Heaven welcomed home one of its finest daughters at 11:11 pm on May 1, 2026, with her husband and all six children by her side.

She was born in a little log cabin in Whiterocks, Utah, on April 14, 1937, to Lura Melba Hoops and Ronald Arnie Eksund. She graduated from Union High School in Roosevelt, Utah in 1955. She moved to Salt Lake City with dear friends to start her adult life. She didn’t expect to meet and fall for the love of her life, Frank Ellis Slater, so quickly. They sealed their love on May 31, 1956. That love has endured for 70 years and produced six children; Rona Loye (David) Wright, Julie (John) Jensen, Christine (Kray) Barkdull, Craig (Sherrie) Slater, Cindy (Ken) Kitchen and Janel (Chris) Colohan.

Phyllis’ greatest accomplishment in life was being an adored wife and the best mother ever. She was a great cook, excelling in her family’s favorites, apple pie and cinnamon rolls and Frank’s much-craved chili. She was successful in everything she did, holding many prominent positions in church, community and social clubs. She was absolutely loved by everyone she met. No one could ever have a sweeter, calmer disposition. She loved cruising, camping with her family, playing cards, golfing, crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilting, and a good hearty giggle.

She is survived by her devoted husband, six children and their spouse whom she loved as her own, 26 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sisters ArVella Morrill and Bonnie (Dave) Campbell, brother-in-law Dennis (Sally) Slater, sister-in-law Marilyn (Richard) Lewis and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving parents; her father and mother in-law Ellis and Mildred Slater, brother-in-law Elvin Morrill, sister-in-law Crolynn Slater, brother-in-law and his wife Bruce and Teri Slater, and brother-in-law Jimmie Slater.
