Listen to Obituary

Phillip Boyd Whitehead was born September 12, 1943, to Clayton Burnett and Bernice Brimhall Whitehead in Los Angles, California. They moved to Ogden, Utah in 1948.

Shortly after their move, Phil was bitten by a horsefly and spent three months comatose in the hospital with sleeping sickness.

He attended Lincoln Elementary, Mound Fort Junior High and Ben Lomond High School, graduating in 1961. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering at Weber State University.

Phil married and was sealed to Sally Schooff in the Ogden Temple. They have two sons, Michael Benjamin and Jeffrey Scott.

Phil worked many jobs beginning with selling doughnuts when he was ten years old. He finished his working career at Hill Field Airforce Base as a machinist and retired as a manager in the tool and dye section.

A dedicated leader in the Boy Scouts of America, he spent over 25 years leading young boys in the Cub Scouting program and also the Varsity Scouts. He attended the National Jamboree, Silver Wolf Leadership training, and Philmont Scout Ranch. He led many young men, including his own sons, to the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Award. For the Cub Scout Arrow of Light presentation, he made, by hand, and wore a white tan hide suit with a full headdress.

Phil was known for his Dutch oven cooking and at one time he had 24 Dutch ovens. Returning from his fishing trips in the Sea of Cortez, he cooked the fish in his Dutch ovens and shared with the neighbors.

Phil leaves behind his sons, Michael Benjamin “Ben” and Jeffrey Scott “Jeff” and his two grandchildren, Brianna and Devin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brothers, Craig, Robert and James.
