Norman Barnes

Listen to Obituary

Our dearest Husband, Daddio, and Grandpa, Norman Barnes passed away peacefully due to complications from old age early in the morning on January 14, 2026.

Norm was born on Christmas Eve, 1943. Christmas time was extra special for Norm because of this. He always wanted to make sure everyone was taken care of at Christmas and would often dress as Santa to help spread Christmas cheer.

He is the last child of George Earl and Melva Barnes. Norm spent his growing up years in South Ogden. He loved the outdoors playing baseball and any other sports. He excelled in his studies and graduated as Valedictorian from Bonneville High School in 1962.

Norm had a deep love for Jesus Christ from a young age and after high school chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Spanish speaking San Antonio Mission. He developed a great love for the people and the Spanish language. This was the catalyst for a lifetime of service to his Savior, Jesus Christ.

In 1967 while attending Weber State College, Norm met the young woman who would steal his heart and sweep him off his feet, Elizabeth Hart. Norm and Liz married on May 31, 1968, in the Salt Lake Temple. They would spend 17 beautiful years together raising five children, Shelly, Jeremy, Nathan, Tara, and Tiffany. Liz passed away in 1985 due to complications from cancer.

In 1995, Norm met and married the love of his life, Julie Ann Kemp. They married on June 16, 1995, and that marriage was soon solemnized in the Bountiful, Utah Temple. Julie added Brian, David, and Jeff to the family. Raising seven children was not an easy task but somehow Norm and Julie were always able to find joy in every experience.

Norm had a career with the state of Utah’s court systems that spanned over 30 years. Starting as a claims investigator and then spending over 25 years as an administrative law judge. Norm loved his work and often reflected on the amazing experiences he had while serving the people of the state of Utah.

After retirement Norm again felt the need to serve a mission. This time he and his sweetheart Julie would labor in the Atlanta, Georgia Mission. They loved the people they served and cherished the relationships built and experiences they encountered while serving The Lord.

Norm and Julie loved to travel, especially to Maui with their daughter Tara. They were devoted parents, grandparents and loved following the activities of their children and grandchildren.

Norm loved to serve people whenever and however he could. He was nominated for and received a KSL ‘High-five” award for the simple acts of service rendered to his friends and neighbors.

Norm had a deep love for and faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. His testimony was his most precious possession and his family his greatest gift. Both are his legacy.

Norm is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Julie; daughters, Shelly Jackson (Mat), Tara Woolley, and Tiffany Stewart (Jeremy); sons, Nathan Barnes, Brian Nelson (Shelby), David Nelson (Lauren), and Jeff Nelson. Twenty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Liz), son (Jeremy), son in law (Marc Taylor), all his brothers and sisters as well as multiple brother and sister in laws.

Special thanks to all the caregivers at Chancellor Gardens and Utah Home Health and Hospice who gave such great care during his final months.
