Nelda “Jewel” Spencer Christopherson, age 90, passed away on May 13, 2024, after a long battle with cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Jewel was born on April 19, 1934, to Cosme Gutierrez (C. G.) and Nelda Jane Spencer in Provo, Utah. She grew up in Richfield, Utah, where she loved riding horses and working with her dad at his auto parts store.
Jewel married her eternal companion, LeRoy Warner Christopherson, on June 6, 1956, in the Manti Utah Temple. Together they were blessed with 7 children: David LeRoy Christopherson, Sherida Steffen (David), James Spencer Christopherson (Ilona), L. William (Bill) Christopherson (Susan), Michael Lynn Christopherson (Cynthia), Lynann Barnes (Michael), Anthony (Tony) Paul Christopherson (Johanna).
Jewel was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities, including librarian, sunday school teacher, primary teacher, counselor in the primary presidency, stake beekeeper, and cub scouts. She loved the mission she served with her sweetheart in Poland and several missions as a family history missionary at the Worldwide Support Center.
Jewel loved spending time with her family playing games, camping, and riding horses. She had a love for reading and learning new things and picked up many new hobbies over the years. Their horses were like her children, especially “Sam.” She spent a lot of time with children and grandchildren at horse shows.
Jewel earned her bachelor’s degree from BYU and taught preschool after they were married before having children. After her children were grown, Jewel taught preschool in her home for many years. She was always first and foremost a wife, mother, and grandmother, a career she excelled at.
Jewel is survived by her husband, 5 children, 24 grandchildren,31 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by her siblings: Loralee Pearson (Maughn), Carl Spencer (Terry), Jon Fred Spencer (Diana), and Tinna Willie.
