Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Nancy Jane Sycamore Bachman, returned to her Father in Heaven on Monday, April 6, 2026, at the age of 84. She passed away peacefully, while surrounded by her family.
Nancy was born in Memphis, Tennessee, was the daughter of Dr. Leland and Mary Rae Christensen Sycamore, and was the oldest of their five children. She moved to Ogden, Utah, shortly after. At the age of four, Nancy contracted polio and eventually became paralyzed to her neck. She was not expected to live but did through the power of prayer. Not only was she able to walk again, but she was able to remain active in dance. She was asked to dance in front of many groups and at hospitals, performing for crippled children to give them hope. Her story was even featured in the newspaper.
As a daughter of a military surgeon, she was able to develop a love of travel at a young age. In addition to Tennessee and Utah, she lived in Alaska and California. She had a close relationship with her father, who died when she was 17 years old. We are certain she was reunited with her parents in Heaven.
Nancy went on to attend Ogden High School, Weber College, and Utah State University. She graduated from Utah State University with two degrees: Elementary Education and Foods and Nutrition. At all three schools she was in the choir. She was on the marching drill team at Weber College and was in a singing quartet.
During college, Nancy met the love of her life, Lorin Kent Bachman, and they were married in 1963 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple by Apostle N. Eldon Tanner, whom Kent had met while serving on his mission. She taught school in Salt Lake City while Kent attended Law School.
Nancy was married to Kent for 62 years. She modeled what a strong marriage was all about. With their combined hard work and Nancy’s constant and devoted support, Kent went on to have a successful legal career and served as a juvenile court judge for 33 years. Nancy went on to be a mother to ten wonderful children, all of whom are successful thanks to her strong example, constant sacrifice, strong focus on education, and loving demeanor. As a stay-at-home mother, she supported all of her children in their various sports and other pursuits, helped all of her sons become Eagle Scouts (dragging many of them across the finish line herself), and sewed most of her daughter’s school dance dresses and nearly all of the bridesmaid dresses for each of her children’s weddings. Nancy always put her children first and always made sure holidays were always special and celebrated. People always asked for Nancy’s advice on family and children and loved hearing her words of wisdom. Her children have always been impressed with her dedication to her family and her faith.
Nancy was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding various callings and serving others throughout the years. Nancy’s children learned the importance of family and Christlike love from her throughout her years.
Nancy began countless family traditions and provided magical memories that her children have continued to carry on in their own homes, including Witchalina at Halloween, heart-shaped meatloaf on Valentine’s Day, corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day and her famous cheese soup on Christmas Eve. She made each of her children personalized Christmas stockings, each of which took her at least one year to sew.
People also always loved to receive Christmas and birthday cards addressed to them in her beautiful calligraphy. Many have said that her calligraphy was an art and should be created into a font. Nancy served as the PTA president at her children's schools. She also served in the Jr. League and was an active member in Camenae for many years.
After Kent retired and her children were grown, she continued to love to travel. She loved talking to her children daily and always was aware of the details in each of their lives. She also went on to publish not only one but three memoirs which featured her life and the ancestry of her family. Her family will cherish her words of wisdom, memories, and example she set for others.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband, L. Kent; children, Christopher (Jenny) of Pocatello, Idaho; Mary (Paul) of Minnetonka, Minnesota; Rebecca (Jim) of Pleasant View, Utah; Steve (Heidi) of West Haven, Utah; Elizabeth (Tim) of Chandler, Arizona; Paul (Christina) of South Ogden, Utah; Rachel (Nick) of San Tan Valley, Arizona; Adam (Jodi) of South Ogden, Utah; Deborah (Bryson) of Mechanicsville, Virginia; and Sarah of South Ogden, Utah. She also had 43 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Mary Rae.
