Myrna (Gillespie) Schlegel, a loving, kind, and gentle soul, returned to her Heavenly Father after alife filled with devotion, adventure, and unwavering compassion. She was born on October 24, 1938, in Provo, Utah, to her beloved parents, Ileen Cox and Ross Green Gillespie. An only child, Myrna grew up in Tooele surrounded by a close-knit circle of extended family who nurtured her warm heart and lifelong love for others.
On January 11, 1956, Myrna was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple to Ercell 0. Blain. Together they welcomed seven children, who remained some of the biggest joys of her life: Teri Lynn Sowby (Jim), Karen Sue Zimmer (Mike), David Lance Blain (Cambria), Courtnie Elizabeth Wilcox (Jim), Robyn Hali Blain-Bell, Michael Ross Blain (Patti) and Summer Anne Lyon (Greg). These seven children gave her 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, all of whom she cherished.
Myrna embraced motherhood with tenderness, patience, and a quiet strength that shaped her family for generations. Her home-wherever it happened to be-was a place of safety, laughter, and unconditional love.
Because of Ercell’s military service, Myrna lived in many places across the world, each adding richness to her life story. She made homes in England, Texas, Mississippi, Arizona, Montana, Spain, South Carolina, and Guam, adapting with grace and finding beauty in every new chapter.
Later in life, Myrna’s path led her to Walter Louis Schlegel, to whom she was sealed on September 3, 1994, in the Salt Lake Temple. Her marriage to Walt gave her 8 stepchildren, that she welcomed with an open heart. Together they shared a deep devotion to service and faith. Myrna and Walter served three missions: a Church Education Mission in New Zealand, as St. Louis Temple workers, and on the BYU-Hawaii campus in Laie. These years of service were among the most cherished of her life, filled with purpose, spiritual growth, and the joy of helping others.
Myrna will be remembered for her gentle voice, her soft smile, and the way she made everyone feel seen and loved. She lived with humility, faith, and a quiet courage that touched all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, and all who were blessed by her kindness. Her life was a testament to love-steadfast, patient, and enduring.
