In Loving Memory of Mikel (Mickie) Hope Douglas

Mikel (Mickie) Hope Douglas, aged 75, peacefully passed away on September 25, 2025, at her home in Layton, Utah. She was born on January 21, 1950, in St. Charles, Missouri, to Helen J. Ham and Eli M. Douglas.

Mickie is survived by her brother, Steven Douglas. She is also lovingly remembered by her chosen family, longtime friends Susan Jensen (Ron) and Esther Medina (Juan), as well as Tracey Alene, her devoted caregiver.

Mickie dedicated her career to public service, working for the Social Security Administration. She retired in 2021 as a Public Affairs Specialist, a role she excelled in and took great pride in. Her commitment and passion for her work left a lasting impact on those she served and worked alongside.

Mickie was an avid reader whose love of books was instantly apparent to anyone who visited her home—her collection was so vast it could have filled a small library. This lifelong passion for literature inspired her to volunteer at the Center for The Blind, where she recorded books on tape, helping to make stories accessible to others.

In addition to her love of reading, Mickie enjoyed collecting antiques. She thoughtfully curated her home with treasured pieces that brought her happiness and told stories of their own. Her appreciation for the arts extended to the theater, a passion she discovered in college. There, she enthusiastically participated in stage productions, most notably starring as Lucy in a performance of “Charlie Brown.”

Mickie’s creativity also found expression through writing. She authored a novel, Kindred Spirits, and was actively pursuing its publication when illness interrupted her plans. Her love of storytelling and the arts was evident in every aspect of her life, touching those who knew her and leaving a lasting legacy.

Mickie was diagnosed with the rare neurological condition Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) in June 2023, although she had been experiencing symptoms for several years prior to her diagnosis. She approached this challenging disease with remarkable determination and grace. Despite the daily frustrations—often referring to them as “drop, spill, clean up, repeat” days—Mickie maintained her sense of humor throughout her journey. Her ability to keep smiling and to brighten any room remained a testament to her resilient spirit.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Mickie’s neurologist, Dr. Kathleen MeKee, for her compassionate care. Heartfelt appreciation also goes to the Intermountain Hospice team, especially Kristy, her nurse, and the many kind volunteers.

A big shoutout is given to the Layton City firefighters, who provided gentle and respectful assistance whenever needed.
