Mike "Miguel" Payan

With the deepest heartache, we announce the passing of Mike “Miguel” Payan on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, from injuries sustained doing what he loved most – mountain biking in the Wasatch Mountains. 

Mike was born on August 29, 1961, in Ogden, Utah, to Ellen Mendoza Payan and Joe Louis Payan. He was the oldest brother to Claudia, Dave, and Charles Payan. Mike grew up in Roy, Utah. Graduating from Roy High School in 1979. He was a loyal Royal his whole life. Mike started at Steven’s Henager College before deciding on a healthcare career. He graduated from Weber State in 1993 with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. Mike loved his profession, colleagues, and the patients who crossed his path over the years. He was known for his knowledge, dedication, and compassion in the field.

Those who knew him would describe him as “iconic.” He took the world by storm with his sense of style and candid smile. He was a role model to those around him, inspiring others to live each day to the fullest, just as he did. While he enjoyed outdoor activities each season, cycling was his true passion. Quietly setting goals for himself, he set out to achieve them mile by mile, faster and stronger. Mike genuinely enjoyed his conversations and the time spent catching up with each person he came in contact with. Mike had an abundance of good traits, which in turn made him a truly wonderful person.

Mike married Shelly Wilmoth on June 27, 1987. They were blessed with two beautiful and caring children, Haydan and Hadley. They later divorced but remained the best of friends and co-parents. Mike was an unwavering, proud, and loving Dad. He poured his heart into teaching his kids to be the best versions of themselves. Above all, he prioritized spending quality time with Haydan and Hadley. His adventurous spirit was instilled in his family, allowing them incredible experiences together. Mike's children will continue his love and passion for life.

The family would like to thank the individuals who came to Mike’s aid on the trail after the accident and provided comfort during his evacuation. They will be forever grateful for the dedication and care provided that day. 

Mike is survived by his son Haydan Payan (partner Brook Hadley), daughter Hadley Payan (husband Blake Wilson), his mother Ellen Payan, siblings Claudia Payan, Dave Payan (wife Carey), and Charles Payan (wife Jennifer), and in-laws Mike and Mike Wilmoth, along with many more family members and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Louis Payan, niece Kamille Payan, and the mother of his children, Shelly Wilmoth Payan.

Mike was a light in this world, which will continue to guide his loved ones.

A celebration of life will be held at Snowbasin Resort on August 29, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., 3925 E. Snowbasin Road, Huntsville, Utah, in honor of Mike's 63rd birthday. Additional details to follow.
