Mele Seir Fe'ofa'aki Mausia Fangu

December 8, 1944 — June 6, 2024

Bountiful, Utah

Mele Seini Fe’ofa’aki Mausia Fangu was born on December 8, 1944 to Teisa Moala and Sione Ika Mausia in Ha’akame, Tonga.

After immigrating to the United States, she was married and sealed to Sione Latu Fangu at the Oakland Temple, where they became the first Tongan couple to marry in the Oakland Temple. She then gave birth to two sons: John Latu Fangu and Wayne Keali’i Fangu. Their family resided on the street of Laguna Avenue, where they lived near her siblings and their families as well.

When her husband accepted his church calling as Stake President for the East Oakland Tongan Stake, she supported him wholly while also working part-time at the Church Distribution Center across the street from the temple.

Her warm smile and Christlike love reflected on her faith and dedication to the restored gospel. She attended church regularly. Scriptures and church manuals sat by her bedside every night. Her devotion to her hardworking husband carried on as she ultimately became his caregiver for over 15 years until he passed.

Grandma Mele cherished all of her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. If her health permitted, she rarely missed a family gathering or celebration. Often dressed in gold jewelry, red lipstick, and her hair curled, it was hard to miss her at events. When she didn’t have plans, she loved shopping at thrift stores and flea markets. She often went to her sisters’ houses for a quick chat with them and their family. Grandma Mele also loved watching game shows such as Jeopardy and Family Feud. In 2019, she moved to Utah to spend more time with her grandkids. As her health declined, weekly road trips to casinos in Wendover somehow eased her pain. Despite her suffering, she always found a way to be joyful. Her enduring strength and tenderness will always be remembered. Grandma Mele will continue to remain in our hearts forever until we meet again.

A viewing will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, at the Bountiful 6th Ward Building, 3350 S. 100 E. Bountiful, UT.   Following the visitation, the funeral service will begin at 12:00 pm in the chapel. Interment will take place at Bountiful City Cemetery.
