Maxine Stevenson Smedley

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend, Maxine Stevenson Smedley was released from her physical pain on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 11, 1930 to Sterling Watt and Lenora Emeline Simmons Stevenson. Her father passed away when Maxine was two years old. Her mother later married Leon Milton Johnson who raised her as his own.

On February 17, 1948 she married her eternal sweetheart, Wayne Thurgood Smedley, in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Idaho Falls where their first two children were born. After Wayne''s father''s death, they returned to Syracuse, to care for his mother''s farm. There they added four more children. They then moved to Layton and lived there until August 2008. They recently became residents of Chancellor Gardens in Clearfield.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the gospel. She served as Relief Society president, counselor in Young Women''s presidencies, as choir director, chorister and faithful visiting teacher. She and Wayne served a mission in Santa Rosa, California from 1988-89.

Maxine was blessed with a beautiful voice which she lovingly shared at hundreds of funerals. Other talents included sewing, crocheting, ceramics, and in her later years, making hundreds of seasonal bears. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, and six children, Douglas (Beverly) Smedley, Kathy Smedley, Mike (Babe) Smedley, Tammy (Gary) Boam, Randy (Lynda) Smedley and David (Kari) Smedley. She also leaves behind 26 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Doris Barton, Ann L. Harris (Floyd Poll), one brother, Keith (Linda) Johnson and one step-sister, Carol (Richard) Bahr.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, grandson, Matthew Boam, sisters, Shirley Ottesen and LaRue Huxley.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 15, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary with Bishop Stephen Collins, officiating.

Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.

The family would like to express special thanks to the angels from Chancellor Gardens, Thatcher Brook Home Health and Hospice, Dr. Mark K. Milligan and Janene Smith for their loving care.

The family suggests donations be made to the United Way or the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
