Matilda “Mattie” Mary Vigil, born Matilda Mary Romero, 92; the beloved matriarch of the Vigil family passed away on April 1, 2025, peacefully in her home among family.
Born on March 25, 1933, in Del Norte, Colorado, to Rome Romero and Jesusita “Jessie” Romero, born Jesusita Medina. Mattie was one of fourteen children and named after her Aunt Matilda on her mother’s side. In November of 1951, she was married to the love of her life, Manuel “Manny” Vigil, they went on to welcome three children.
Mattie and Manny moved from Colorado to Ogden Utah, then to Layton Utah, and most recently to Clinton Utah. As a mother of three, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of four, Mattie truly was the heart of the Vigil family.
Mattie attended Stevens-Henager College where she studied to become a secretary, after completing her studies, she went on to work as a secretary at the ATC in Ogden, Utah where she retired after 20 years of service.
Mattie was an avid athlete in her youth, she enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, bowling, and golf. She also enjoyed watching football, basketball, golf, movies, and TV shows with family. She loved playing cards and spent many weekends in Wendover among friends and family and was also a faithful member of the Catholic Church. Mattie’s home was always open and often served as a gathering place for family and friends. She was fiercely clever, funny, loving, honest, and genuine. She truly loved her family and especially loved to laugh.
Mattie is survived by her children Connie (Tom) Quintana and Arthur (Kimberly) Vigil; her grandchildren Jason Quintanta, Jamie (Travis) Kohler, Daniel Quintana, Devyn (Ticen) Monson, Connor Vigil, and Garrett Vigil; and by her great-grandchildren Isabella Quintanta, Sara Quintana, Kasey Kohler, and Violet Kohler.
Previously departed loved ones include Mattie’s parents Rome Romero and Jesusita “Jessie” Romero, all of Mattie’s siblings, Mattie’s husband Manuel “Manny” Vigil, her daughter Cathy Hague, and her granddaughter Shannon Quintana.
The family would like to offer thanks to Rocky Mountain Home Care & Hospice and to the hospice nurses who took care of Mattie.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Lindquist’s Syracuse Mortuary (869 South 2000 West, Syracuse, Utah 84075) on Monday, April 7, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 PM, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM.
There will be a Funeral Mass at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church (4050 South 3900 West, West Haven, Utah 84401) at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, followed by a Gravesite Service at Syracuse City Cemetery (1250 South 1000 West, Syracuse, Utah 84075), lunch will also be provided at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church following the Gravesite Service.
